Steve Bannon’s Cardinal Pal Denies Guam Post Is Pope Punishment

An arch-conservative American cardinal has denied that his sudden posting to Guam in the wake of a Vatican fake news attack on Pope Francis is a punishment from the liberal pontiff.

The Vatican dispatched Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke to Guam to be the judge at a trial there of an archbishop who was removed from office last year after several allegations of child sex abuse. Burke insisted the trial will likely be finished by the summer and told Mediaset in Italy that the posting was normal and not a punishment from the pope, though the two men have clashed in the past.

Burke was named in a recent New York Times article as a friend of Donald Trump’s top aide Steve Bannon. They’re both members of an emboldened Catholic power base — self-described “rad trads,” or radical traditionalists — pushing for a stricter interpretation of Church teachings, according to the Times. The pope, on the other hand, is one of the more liberal pontiffs of the last several decades. He preaches compassion, has encouraged protesting to achieve justice, is concerned about climate change and has attacked policies of the Trump administration without mentioning the president’s name.

Burke recently angered the pope after reportedly demanding the suspension of a leader of a traditionally conservative Catholic charity organization, the Knights of Malta, for arranging the distribution of free condoms in Myanmar. Francis also was recently the target of a fake publication designed by conservatives to look like the official Vatican newspaper. A phony interview in the paper mocked his liberal views

Burke’s Guam trial is already experiencing trouble. An altar boy who had accused the local archbishop of sex abuse has refused to take the stand, the Catholic News Agency reported.

His lawyer complained that the boy would be intimidated at the hearing because he would be surrounded and questioned by Catholic priests acting as the defense attorney, the prosecutor and the judge — yet the boy’s lawyer would not be allowed to be present to advise his client.

Advocates for victims of priest sex abuse complained about the choice of Burke for the case. They said the conservative cardinal has in other cases “consistently defended accused clergy and played hardball with victims,” Anne Barrett Doyle, a co-director of BishopAccountability.org told the Pacific Daily News.

WATCH: “Finding” the Time to Do Things

Do you have things you’d like to do, but keep putting them off until you “find the time”…? And in today’s busy world, where we are constantly bombarded with different things to give our attention to, how often does that strategy actually work out? Here’s a video to help you stop kidding yourself, and start enhancing your chances of success.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

This Is What Obamacare’s Critics Won’t Admit Or Simply Don’t Understand

THOUSAND OAKS, California ― Maryann Hammers is likely to die from ovarian cancer someday. But she hopes someday won’t come anytime soon.

Hammers, 61, received the diagnosis in late 2013, and doctors told her that it was stage 3-C, which meant that she could live for many years with the right treatment and a little luck. So far, she’s had both. She’s in remission for the second time, and her last course of chemotherapy ended a year and a half ago. But recent blood tests detected elevated levels of a protein associated with tumors, she explained when we met a few weeks ago. “Maybe it’s a fluke,” she said. “I hope so. I kinda feel like the clock is ticking.”

If the cancer is back, Hammers said, she may need surgery similar to her two previous operations — “gigantic surgeries, gutted like a fish and hospitalized for many days.” Chemotherapy would likely come next, plus medication, hospitalization, and home care. But Hammers considers herself lucky because she’s been able to get treatment at City of Hope, a highly respected Southern California cancer research and treatment center, and luckier still that she’s been able to pay for the treatment with insurance — an Anthem Blue Cross policy she bought through Covered California, the exchange her state created under the Affordable Care Act.

To hear President Donald Trump, House Speaker Paul Ryan and other Republicans tell it, Obamacare has been a disaster, even for those who obtained coverage through the law. Hammers has a very different perspective. She’s a freelance writer and editor, which means she has no employer-provided insurance. In the old days, if she’d gone shopping for a policy with her cancer diagnosis, she would have struggled to find a carrier willing to sell her one.

I’m terrified. … Do you know how easy it is to use a million dollars when you’re getting cancer treatment?
Maryann Hammers, Thousand Oaks, California

And it’s not just the pre-existing condition guarantee, which even critics like Trump say they support, that Hammers has found so valuable. The Affordable Care Act requires insurers to cover a wide range of services and treatments — which, in her case, has included multiple shots of Neulasta, a medication that boosts white blood cell counts and typically costs several thousand dollars per injection. The law also prohibits annual or lifetime limits on benefits, which, as a long-term cancer patient, she would be a prime candidate to exceed.

Policies with such robust coverage inevitably cost thousands of dollars a year, more than Hammers could afford on her own — particularly since battling the disease has cut into her work hours. But the law’s generous tax credits discount the premiums and help with the out-of-pocket costs, too. “Without the Affordable Care Act, I honestly do not know what I would have done,” she said.

The coverage Hammers has today still isn’t as good as what she had years ago, when she worked for a company that provided benefits. But it’s better than what she had in the years right before the cancer diagnosis, when she was buying insurance on her own. The latter plan covered fewer services and came with out-of-pocket costs high enough to discourage her from getting checkups. Obamacare’s introduction of free preventive screenings led her to schedule a long-overdue colonoscopy. During routine preparation for that procedure, a physician first felt a lump in her abdomen.

Sometimes Hammers wonders whether, with less sporadic doctor visits, the cancer might have been caught a little sooner. “But I couldn’t afford a fat doctor’s bill. And I thought I was super healthy.”

These days, something else looms even larger in her mind — the possibility that Trump and the Republican Congress will repeal the health care law without an adequate replacement, or maybe with no replacement at all.

“I’m terrified — isn’t that crazy?” Hammers said. “My biggest source of stress right now isn’t the fact that I have incurable cancer. It’s the prospect of losing my insurance.”

What American Health Care Used To Look Like

To appreciate the significance of stories like Hammers’ and what they say about the Affordable Care Act, it helps to remember what used to happen to people like her before the law took effect. By 2009, when President Barack Obama took office, roughly 1 in 6 Americans had no health care insurance, and even the insured could still face crippling medical bills. As a reporter covering health care during those years, I met these people. Some of their stories stand out, even now, because they capture the old system at its callous, capricious worst.

Gary Rotzler, a quality engineer at a defense contractor in upstate New York, lost his family coverage in the early 1990s when he lost his job. He ended up uninsured for two years, while he juggled stints as an independent contractor. His wife, Betsy, made do without doctor visits even after she started feeling some strange pains. By the time she got a checkup, she had advanced breast cancer. Desperate efforts at treatment failed. After she died, Gary, a father of three, had to declare bankruptcy because of all the unpaid medical bills.

Jacqueline Ruess, a widow in south Florida, thought she was insured. But then she needed expensive tests when her physicians suspected she had cancer. Although the tests were negative, the insurer refused to pay the bills because, it said, a brief episode of a routine gynecological problem in her past qualified as a pre-existing condition.

Tony Montenegro, an immigrant from El Salvador living in Los Angeles, was uninsured and working as a security guard, until untreated diabetes left him legally blind.

Marijon Binder, an impoverished former nun in Chicago, was sued by a Catholic hospital over medical expenses she couldn’t pay.

And Russ Doren, a schoolteacher in a Denver suburb, believed he had good insurance until the bills for his wife’s inpatient treatment at a psychiatric hospital hit the limit for mental health coverage. The hospital released her, despite worries that she was not ready. A few days later, she took her own life.

The Affordable Care Act of 2010 was an effort to address these kinds of problems — to carry on the crusade for universal coverage that Harry Truman had launched some 60 years before. But precisely because Obama and his allies were determined to succeed where predecessors had failed, they made a series of concessions that necessarily limited the law’s ambition.

They expanded Medicaid and regulated private insurance rather than start a whole new government-run program. They dialed back demands for lower prices from drugmakers, hospitals and other health care industries. And they agreed to tight budget constraints for the program as a whole, rather than risk a revolt among more conservative Democrats. These decisions meant that health insurance would ultimately be more expensive and the new system’s financial assistance would be less generous.

Still, projections showed that the law would bring coverage to millions while giving policymakers tools they could use to reduce medical costs over time. When the Senate passed its version of the legislation in December 2009, then-Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) described the program as a “starter home” with a solid foundation and room for expansion.

Where Obamacare Failed And Where It Succeeded

Seven years later, Trump and the Affordable Care Act’s other critics insist that the program has been a boondoggle — that the Obamacare starter home needs demolition. Some of their objections are philosophical, and some, like the persistent belief that the law set up “death panels,” are fantastical. But others focus on the law’s actual consequences.

High on that list of consequences are the higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs that some people face. The new rules, like coverage of pre-existing conditions, have made policies more expensive, and Obamacare’s financial aid frequently doesn’t offset the increases. A “rate shock” wave hit suddenly in the fall of 2013, when insurers unveiled their newly upgraded plans and in many cases canceled old ones — infuriating customers who remembered Obama’s promise that “if you like your plan, you can keep it,” while alienating even some of those sympathetic to what Obama and the Democrats were trying to do.

I’ve interviewed plenty of these people, too. A few weeks ago, I spoke with Faisuly Scheurer, a real estate agent from Blowing Rock, North Carolina. She and her husband, who works in the restaurant business, were excited about the health care law because they’d struggled to find decent, affordable insurance. They make about $ 60,000 a year, before taxes, with two kids and college tuition looming in the not-distant future, she said.

In late 2013, they checked out their options and learned that, after tax credits, coverage would cost $ 360 a month. Scheurer said she remembers thinking, “OK, that is really tight. But if the benefits are good, we are going to have to skimp on other things to make it work.” Then she learned about the out-of-pocket costs, which could reach $ 13,000 over the course of a year depending on her family’s medical needs. “My disappointment was indescribable.”

The Scheurer family ultimately decided to remain uninsured. They’re not the only ones, and that has weakened the system as a whole. The people eschewing coverage tend to be relatively healthy, since they’re most willing to take the risk of no coverage. That’s created big problems for insurers, which need the premiums from healthy folks to offset the high medical bills of people with serious conditions.

Many insurers have reacted by raising premiums or pulling out of some places entirely, leaving dysfunctional markets in North Carolina and a handful of other states. Just this week, Humana, which had already scaled back its offerings, announced that it was pulling out of the Affordable Care Act exchanges altogether. At least for the moment, 16 counties in Tennessee don’t have a single insurer committed to offering coverage in 2018.

Trump, Ryan and other Republicans pounced on the Humana news, citing it as more proof of a “failed system” and the need for repeal. That’s pretty typical of how the political conversation about the Affordable Care Act has proceeded for the last seven years. The focus is on everything that’s gone wrong with Obamacare, with scant attention to what’s gone right.

And yet the list of what’s gone right is long.

  • In states like California and Michigan, the newly regulated markets appear to be working as the law’s architects intended, except for some rural areas that insurers have never served that well. Middle-class people in those states have better, more affordable options.

  • It looks like more insurers are figuring out how to make their products work and how to successfully compete for business. Customers have turned out to be more price-sensitive than insurers originally anticipated. In general, the carriers that struggle are large national companies without much experience selling directly to consumers, rather than through employers.

  • Last year’s big premium increases followed two years in which average premiums were far below projections, a sign that carriers simply started their pricing too low. Even now, on average, the premiums people pay for exchange insurance are on a par with, or even a bit cheaper than, equivalent employer policies — and that’s before the tax credits.

  • The majority of people who are buying insurance on their own or get their coverage through Medicaid are satisfied with it, according to separate surveys by the Commonwealth Fund and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. The level of satisfaction with the new coverage still trails that involving employer-provided insurance, and it has declined over time. But it’s clearly in positive territory

And then there’s the fact that the number of people without health insurance is the lowest that government or private surveys have ever recorded. When confronted with questions about the people who gained coverage because of the law, Republicans often say something about sparing those people from disruption ― and then argue that even those who obtained insurance through the law are suffering and no better off. This claim is wildly inconsistent with the experience of people like Maryann Hammers ― and, more important, it’s wildly inconsistent with the best available research.

People are struggling less with medical bills, have easier access to primary care and medication, and report that they’re in better health, according to a study that appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2015. The number of people forgoing care because of costs or being “very worried” about paying for a catastrophic medical bill dropped substantially among the newly insured, Kaiser Foundation researchers found last year when they focused on people in California.

A bunch of other studies have turned up similar evidence, All of them concur with a landmark report on the effects of Massachusetts’ 2006 insurance expansion, which was a prototype for the national legislation. Residents of that state experienced better health outcomes and less financial stress, according to the study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

“Though it’s had no shortage of controversies and stumbles, there’s really no denying that the ACA has created historic gains in insurance coverage,” said Larry Levitt, a senior vice president at the Kaiser Foundation. “With better coverage that has fewer holes, access to health care has improved and many have better protection from crushing medical bills.”

What Repeal Would Really Mean

Reasonable people can disagree about whether these achievements justify Obamacare’s costs, which include not only higher premiums for the young and healthy but also hefty new taxes on the wealthiest Americans. That’s a debate about values and priorities as much as facts.

What’s not in dispute, or shouldn’t be, is the stark choice on the political agenda right now.

Democratic lawmakers still argue for the principle that Truman laid out in 1948: “health security for all, regardless of residence, station, or race.” They think the Affordable Care Act means the U.S. is closer to that goal and that the next step should be to bolster the law ― by using government power to force down the price of drugs, hospital services and other forms of medical care, while providing more generous government assistance to people who still find premiums and out-of-pocket costs too onerous. Basically, they want people like Faisuly Scheurer to end up with the same security that people like Maryann Hammers already have.

Some Republicans talk as if they share these goals. Trump has probably been the most outspoken on this point, promising to deliver “great health care at lower cost” and vowing that “everybody would be covered.” But other Republicans reject the whole concept of health care as a right. Although it’s theoretically possible to draw up a conservative health plan that would improve access and affordability, these aren’t the kinds of plans that Republicans have in mind.

There’s a face to this law, there’s a face to people that are going to be affected by it.
Angela Eilers, Yorba Linda, California

Their schemes envision substantially less government spending on health care, which would mean lower taxes for the wealthy but also less financial assistance for everybody else. Republicans would make insurance cheaper, but only by allowing it to cover fewer services and saddling beneficiaries with even higher out-of-pocket costs. The result would be some mix of more exposure to medical bills and more people without coverage. If Republicans repeal the Affordable Care Act without replacing it ― a real possibility, given profound divisions within the GOP over how to craft a plan ― 32 million more people could go uninsured, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

That would mean real suffering, primarily among those Americans who benefit most from the law now ― the ones with serious medical problems, or too little income to pay for insurance on their own, or both.

Jay Stout, a 20-year-old in Wilmington, North Carolina, is one of those people. He was in good health until a head-on car collision nearly severed his arm and landed him in the hospital for more than a month. Surgeries and rehabilitation would have cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars that, as a community college student working part-time as a busboy, he could never have paid — if not for the Blue Cross plan that his mother had bought through the Affordable Care Act. When we spoke a few weeks ago, he told me the insurance has been “irreplaceable” and that losing it “would be totally devastating.”

Meenakshi Bewtra had never had a serious health problem until her first year at the University of Pennsylvania medical school, when she developed severe gastrointestinal problems — the kind that forced her into the hospital for two months and drove her to drop out of school. Her insurance lapsed, which meant that her GI issues became a pre-existing condition. She eventually found coverage and today she’s a professor of medicine at Penn, where she moonlights as an advocate for universal health insurance.

“For the first time, I truly understood what comprehensive health insurance meant,” Bewtra said, remembering what it was like to become fully covered. “I did not have to worry about how many times I saw a doctor, or how many lab tests I had to get, or having to ration out medications.”

Angela Eilers, who lives in Yorba Linda, California, isn’t worrying about her own health. It’s her daughter Myka who has a congenital heart condition called pulmonary stenosis, which makes it more difficult for the heart to pump blood to the lungs. The little girl has required multiple surgeries and will need intensive medical treatment throughout her childhood.

In 2012, Angela’s husband, Todd, was laid off from his job at an investment firm. Since going without insurance was not an option, they took advantage of COBRA to stay on his old company’s health plan. It was expensive, and Eilers recalled panicking over the possibility they might not be able to pay the premiums. “I remember sitting at the table, thinking of plans. What would be our plan? One of them was … giving up our parents rights to my mom, because she has really good health insurance.”

Eventually her husband started his own consulting business, and that gave them the income to keep up with premiums until 2014 — when they were able to obtain coverage through the Affordable Care Act. Today they have a gold plan, one of the most generous available, for which they pay around $ 20,000 a year. Even though they make too much to qualify for financial assistance, they’re grateful for the coverage. Seven-year-old Myka has already run up more than a half-million dollars in medical bills. In the old days, before Obamacare, they would have worried about hitting their plan’s lifetime limit on benefits.

The family’s coverage has become more expensive over the years. They wish the price were lower, but they’re also not complaining about that. “I’m thankful that the letter was a premium hike, rather than ‘Sorry, we are not going to cover your daughter anymore,’” Angela Eilers said.

When she thinks about the possibility of Obamacare repeal, she wonders if Trump and the Republicans understand what that would really mean. “There’s a face to this law, there’s a face to people that are going to be affected by it,” Eilers said. “It’s not me, it’s not him, it’s her. She’s only 7. And through no fault of her own, why should she suffer? And she’s not the only one.”

‘Late Show’ Imagines Candidate Donald Trump Running Against President Donald Trump

How would candidate Donald Trump campaign against his presidential self?

The “Late Show” imagined such a scenario on Friday, by overlaying audio of some of the verbal attacks Trump made on former President Barack Obama over footage of Trump from the last four weeks.

“This guy plays more golf than people on the PGA tour,” quipped candidate Trump, while photographs of the president on the green flashed up on screen.

Doctors Have Been Treating Lower Back Pain All Wrong

When Julie Price threw out her back for the second time in December, she knew she needed help.

“It was immobilizing and intense,” Price, a 37-year-old New York City-based accountant, told The Huffington Post.

Price, a former athlete, felt she had lost a lot of strength after two pregnancies. She also has flat feet, alignment issues and “bad knees,” so she realized she couldn’t take care of everything alone.

Although the pain started to lessen on its own, Price went to see Allen Chen, director of physiatry at NewYork-Presbyterian/The Spine Hospital, who specializes in treating spine injuries.

Chen, after ruling out structural problems with her spine, prescribed physical therapy once a week and home exercises. She doesn’t have any pain now, and she feels stronger, not just in her back but also in her core and legs, she said.

“Last week I was able to squat without anything hurting, which I never thought would happen,” she said. The physical therapy “has made a world of difference.”

The American College of Physicians, in new guidelines released this week, says a lot more patients should receive the type of treatment Chen prescribed for Price.

Doctors need to educate their patients that lower back pain is like a common cold ― unpleasant but hard to treat and likely to go away on its own. And chances are painkillers won’t do much to help.

“Low back pain is very common, and most [of it] improves over time regardless of treatment,” Nitin Damle, president of the American College of Physicians and a practicing internist, told HuffPost.

That’s a significant task considering that estimates suggest up to a fourth of all adults in the U.S. have had some back pain for at least one day in the past three months. It’s one of the most common reasons Americans go to a doctor.

The new guidelines: Don’t even bother with Tylenol

The new ACP guidelines recommend non-drug treatments, such as massage, yoga, tai chi and acupuncture, as the first line of defense against back pain. Only if those are not effective, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (or NSAIDs, like aspirin and ibuprofen) should be used. Then, if those are ineffective, prescription drugs can be tried.

Another significant change to the guidelines is that acetaminophens (such as Tylenol and the combination drugs Excedrin and Sudafed) should not be used at all for back pain, since recent evidence shows that those over-the-counter painkillers do not actually help back pain.

The guidelines also recommend that doctors prescribe opioids only as a last resort, after other drug and non-drug therapies did not work, and after the doctor has explained the risks and benefits to the patient.

Overuse of over-the-counter painkillers, common among people with lower back pain, can lead to health risks, including heart and gastrointestinal problems. And the serious risks associated with opioid misuse ― including addiction, overdose and death ― have led the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to issue its own guidelines for reducing prescription opioid use across all medical disciplines.

A big benefit of the new guidelines is that they will help patients avoid the risks associated with NSAIDs, Tylenol and, most significantly, opioids, Chen said. Many of the recommended non-drug therapies included in the guidelines ― yoga, tai chi, massage, heat and acupuncture therapy, among others ― are very low risk, he added.

It’s also important to note that the guidelines apply only to low back pain that stays in the back (not the kind that radiates down the leg or to other areas).

Massage, yoga, acupuncture first

“There’s been a push over the past few years in my practice and in many others to push away from medications ― particularly opioids,” Chen told HuffPost in a phone interview.

Previous treatment guidelines for low back pain from 2007 had recommended NSAIDs be used along with a non-drug treatment. “But I think the focus on non-pharmacological treatments for low back pain, opposed to medications ― particularly opioids ― is long overdue,” Chen said.

(ACP considers any guidelines out of date after five years and subsequently subject to review.)

Accessible alternative therapy is more important than ever

The guidelines themselves do not make recommendations for what treatments insurance companies should cover ― and just because the guidelines recommend a certain treatment does not mean your policy will cover it.

“Those may end up being out-of-pocket costs,” Chen said.

Plus, not all of the treatments in the guidelines are even available to all patients depending on where they live. For example, estimates suggest that in the U.S. there will be shortages of physical therapists in as many as 48 states by 2030 (based on current trends in needs for physical therapy and projected numbers of therapists).

For Price, getting to physical therapy once a week is accessible and is covered by her employer’s health insurance. But there are limits on how many sessions the plan will cover, she said.

“It does factor into my thoughts of how long do I need to continue” the therapy, she said.

Jimmy Fallon Kills It With Hilarious Donald Trump Presser Spoof

Donald Trump just wants “four more weeks, four more weeks.”

On Thursday’s broadcast of “The Tonight Show,” host Jimmy Fallon channeled the president to recreate his earlier press conference. Using a Magic 8-Ball, Trump expertly fielded reporters’ questions before deciding it was time to retire the term “fake news,” and replace it with something more sophisticated sounding.

How to Embrace the Gift of Criticism

2017-02-14-1487094125-2445609-dontloseyourfire.jpg

This past October, I received the news from my literary agent that the novel I’d been laboring over and believed was finished, needed more work before she could take it out to market.

It was hard enough to accept this judgment, let alone share my disappointment with anyone–particularly my readers, in spite of the fact they’ve always remained remarkably loyal. Perhaps I was simply embarrassed to admit it. After all, I had made a few declarations that the manuscript was complete, and that I was on my way to finding a publisher.

The process of writing this book had already been somewhat painstaking, beginning back in October of 2015, when–after two years of writing–I received the advice of an established writer and editor: pitch the first 350 pages and begin again. After much contemplation, I decided to follow her suggestion.

That brings me to October 2016, a year later, when I found myself with 450 brand-new pages of completed manuscript. I sent it on to my agent, and this time she was the one to tell me that I had once again failed to reach my goal, although in an entirely different way this time around.

Initially, I couldn’t hear or process her evaluation: she felt that the novel should not be abandoned–but instead further revised. Significantly. Even though I had polished every page until my brain ached, I nevertheless needed to accept that I still had a lot of work to do. I trust my agent and value her experience, so I listened to all she had to say and resolved I would try to push myself through one last draft. This acquiescence, however, came with a steep emotional price tag.

THE NECESSARY EVIL OF CRITIQUE

Depression saturated the following days. One that was dark and deep, though I carried on with my life anyway. But, on a morning not so long afterward, as I brushed my teeth, the novel’s protagonist began to whisper in my ear. From her came a new idea. And then another. By the time five o’clock rolled around, I had scribbled down forty-one revisions I planned to make. And now, some four months after I’d submitted the manuscript to my agent originally, I am happy to say I’ve almost finished those numerous and significant changes. With great satisfaction, I can see how much I’ve improved and transformed the novel. I have to admit that, in so many ways, she was right.

I suppose the point in exposing my failures and regenerations in this writing process is to share with you the value of accepting criticism, enduring the agony of starting over, and learning to revise and adapt to changes in our plans–be they large or small–in order to achieve our dreams. Sometimes we have to let go of old ideas in order to reveal a new direction. In a novel, beginnings and endings change, as do titles, characters, points of view, scenes, and plot lines. The only constant is in knowing what you want to say–rather than knowing how you want to say it.

Going back to the starting gate in order to get to the finish line can be a harsh reality that requires both perseverance and fortitude–two qualities every writer must possess in abundance.

YOU ARE ALL THAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

My mother, the late poet, Anne Sexton, wore a medallion around her neck–which I inherited and still wear–that is inscribed with the Latin phrase: “Illegitimi Non Carborundum.” This means, in rough English (if you will excuse the expletive): “Don’t Let The Bastards Grind You Down.” I reminded myself of that sentiment as I soldiered on with countless revisions and rewrites. While no specific person was “grinding me down” back in October, it did feel, at the time, as if life itself was trying to squash my desire to see this through.

But now, sitting here at my computer in February, I no longer feel overwhelmed with self-doubt and defeat. Once again, I have regained a firm grasp of where my novel is going and how I’m going to get it to the finish line. And this time I’m certain that no one is going to get in my way. Not even myself.

Of course, there are no guarantees in the publishing industry. My agent may still feel uncertain about the novel despite all the hard work I’ve put into it since her last critique. Or, perhaps her response will be the opposite, and she’ll now see it as a blockbuster destined for the best-seller lists. But who’s to say my publisher will agree. The difficult work of four years could be stashed in a banker’s box, consigned to my storage shed, lined up side by side with the discarded drafts of other work and years of old tax returns. This is the risk I accept as one who makes her living as a writer.

Many of us go through similar experiences: a chef dumps a batch of curdled hollandaise sauce, and begins to whip up a new one; a surfer wipes out, and has to paddle in a hurry to catch the next wave; brothers and sisters, or parents and children, sit down together to work out a disagreement and strengthen their emotional bond.

The ability to listen to criticism, and to begin again, is a gift. And it can spark one of life’s most important challenges. If such insights should come to you–be open and take them to heart. It is absolutely possible to improve on a part of your life that is closest to your soul, be it in an intimate relationship or in the work-a-day world, so long as you allow it. Give starting over a chance, and discover the rewards you can reap.

Appeals Court Strikes Down Florida Law Banning Doctors From Asking Patients About Guns

Doctors in Florida can legally counsel patients about gun risks under a federal appeals court ruling that strikes down the state’s controversial “Docs vs. Glocks” gun law.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta ruled Thursday that Florida’s National Rifle Association-backed law violated doctors’ First Amendment rights.

Read the full ruling below.

The Firearm Owners’ Privacy Act, signed in 2011 by Gov. Rick Scott (R), broadly prohibited doctors, emergency room workers and other health care professionals from asking patients whether they had guns, except in vaguely defined circumstances “relevant to the patient’s medical care or safety.”

The law said doctors “should refrain from unnecessarily harassing a patient about firearm ownership during an examination” and prohibited discrimination against firearms owners by refusing care or counseling against firearm ownership. Violators faced huge fines and revocation of their medical license.

The law was immediately challenged by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, which sued the state on behalf of several doctors and more than 11,000 health care organizations.

Doctors routinely ask patients about potential hazards in the home, including drugs, chemicals, firearms and swimming pools. The American Medical Association for nearly 30 years has encouraged members to ask about guns in particular “as a part of childproofing the home and to educate patients to the dangers of firearms to children.”

The NRA and other gun advocates cited six anecdotes of patients who complained questions about firearms ownership invaded their privacy. In one instance, a pediatrician advised a mother who wouldn’t reveal whether she kept a gun in her home to find another doctor.

Florida’s gun laws are weaker than all but a handful of other states, according to rankings by the non-profit group Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Jonathan Lowy, co-counsel in the case and director of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, praised the court’s decision.

Today’s ruling is an important victory for public safety and free speech rights, and a crushing defeat for the corporate gun lobby and the politicians who do its bidding,” Lowy said in a statement. “Politicians and special interest lobbies have no business standing between doctors and their patients, or keeping doctors from telling people the truth about the risks of guns or other products.”

The ruling can be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Samantha Bee Takes Aim At Donald Trump’s ‘Faithful Husky’ Paul Ryan

Samantha Bee dissected House Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) journey from the so-called “leading intellectual of the Republican Party” to President Donald Trump’s “faithful husky” on Wednesday.

“How did a principled social and fiscal conservative like Ryan wind up in bed with a bigoted, adulterous grope machine who wants to blow $ 25 billion on a coyote urinal?” asked the host of “Full Frontal.”

Bee then slammed Ryan for “feebly condemning every racist thing Trump did or said” before the 2016 presidential election “while refusing to condemn Trump himself.”

Green Beret Shares How to Stay Motivated in Difficult Situations

What are the secrets to staying motivated during emotionally difficult times? originally appeared on Quorathe place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world..

Answer by Ronald Fry, Speaker, Entrepreneur, Author of Hammerhead Six, on Quora:

What are the secrets to staying motivated during emotionally difficult times? This is a great question and one that others are more qualified to answer, but I will take a shot at it. Physical, mental, and emotionally difficult times are a normal part of life and can either break us or be used to forge our character. I have had emotionally difficult times as an individual, as a son, as a husband, father, and as a soldier. These are the times when I have had to lean on my God, my family, my friends, and focus on the big picture to get through.

In the last chapters of Hammerhead Six, I share a very personal, painful situation that occurred during our mission to the Pech Valley. I caused collateral damage that affected a local family, the village, and the Afghan soldiers on my camp. It was a situation that pushed my emotions and grief to the limit. I was humbled and accountable. I reflected on the best way to navigate the situation and continued to think about the big picture and why we were there in the first place. The desire to make things right and accomplish our mission forced me to focus on a solution instead of my own emotions. I chose to face it head on regardless of the consequences. The family and I were reconciled, the villagers appreciated that we acknowledged our mistake, and the mission continued successfully.

In retrospect, the personal growth that I attained from navigating the tragedy and not losing perspective was tremendous. I feel that my character, empathy, and emotional spectrum was stretched. It has become a bitter sweet memory for myself and others that experienced it with me.

Psychiatrist: Calling Donald Trump Mentally Ill Is An Insult To The Mentally Ill

A leading psychiatrist is pushing back after a group of industry professionals wrote a letter to The New York Times saying Donald Trump suffers from “grave emotional instability” that “makes him incapable of serving safely as president.”

But it’s not exactly a letter of support for the president.

Allen Frances, professor emeritus of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke University Medical College, told the newspaper that he wrote the criteria for narcissistic personality disorder ― and Trump doesn’t meet it.

“He may be a world-class narcissist, but this doesn’t make him mentally ill, because he does not suffer from the distress and impairment required to diagnose mental disorder,” he wrote.

He added:

“Mr. Trump causes severe distress rather than experiencing it and has been richly rewarded, rather than punished, for his grandiosity, self-absorption and lack of empathy. It is a stigmatizing insult to the mentally ill (who are mostly well behaved and well meaning) to be lumped with Mr. Trump (who is neither).”

Frances called on others in the industry to stop “psychiatric name-calling” and instead denounce Trump “for his ignorance, incompetence, impulsivity and pursuit of dictatorial powers.”

Seth Meyers Mocks Michael Flynn With World’s Shortest Highlight Reel

Seth Meyers looked back at former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s most memorable moments on the job Tuesday. And it didn’t take long.

After playing the briefest of highlight reels, the “Late Night” host imagined how Flynn wrote his resignation letter on Monday amid allegations that he discussed the U.S. sanctions against Russia with its ambassador in the weeks before President Donald Trump took office.

“Twenty-four days, I use disposable razors for longer than that,” said Meyers. “He didn’t even last as long as a David Blaine stunt.”

Author Of The Shack Shares Five Tips For Dealing With Grief

What words of wisdom do you have for people who are going through grief or hardship? originally appeared on Quorathe place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world..

Answer by Wm Paul Young, Author of New York Times Best Seller, The Shack, on Quora:

What words of wisdom do you have for people who are going through grief or hardship? Thank you for the tenderness of this question. Here are a few, I hope helpful thoughts.

First, you are not alone, even though every one puts their best face forward on social media and even in human interactions, everyone knows about loss. There is a huge benefit in the element of faith, in a God who is good all the time and present to my losses.

Second, simplify. We get overwhelmed by the complexity of our losses, all the questions, and are tempted to start ‘future tripping’ – imagining a future that is dominated by loss and things never change. It is not real but seems real to us. Simplify and reduce the world to only today and stay inside the grace of this one day. Tomorrow you will get grace for whatever it actually holds and not what you have imagined.

Third, let people in. We are not designed to try and make our way alone through loss. Healing comes through community and relationship.

Fourth, be willing to let the loss go. This is a cost that some are not willing to pay. The loss becomes an identity and sometimes a prison that we begin to call a sanctuary.

Fifth, but (in light of the last suggestion), grieve and lament well. Throw the apples against the barn door with all your might and scream. Don’t suppress the presence of the wounds of loss. The way out is in and through.

Congress Is Repealing Rules To Keep Guns From The Mentally Ill

WASHINGTON ― Congress is about to take the final step to repeal a Social Security Administration rule that was written to prevent mentally incompetent people from buying guns.

By law, people who have been “adjudicated as a mental defective” by a court or other authority, such as the Social Security Administration, are barred from buying guns and are supposed to be added to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, as it’s known.

But federal officials trying to use the system often complained that the data were incomplete, prompting President George W. Bush to sign the NICS Improvement Amendments Act of 2007.

Still, little was done to gather data from the various federal agencies that are in a position to know if a person lacks the mental wherewithal, especially because of mental illness, to possess a firearm.

The slaughter of 26 children and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut by a mentally ill man in 2012 prompted the Obama administration to renew the effort, leading to the Social Security Administration finally releasing a rule in 2015 that was finalized just last December

But the Congressional Review Act lets Congress repeal rules within 60 legislative days of being adopted.

The GOP-led Congress, claiming that the provision infringes on the gun rights of disabled people, is about to do that. The House already voted for the repeal, and the Senate is set to follow suit Wednesday, despite Republicans’ frequent assertions that the way to deal with gun violence is to deal with mental illness.

“This regulation unfairly stigmatizes people with disabilities. If the regulation is not repealed, it will allow the agency to very unfairly deprive Social Security recipients of their Second Amendment rights,” said Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa). “The regulation would result in disability recipients being reported to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System as ineligible to own a firearm, and thus have their Second Amendment rights violated.”

Grassley added that the rule could apply to such disabilities as “an eating disorder.”

The regulation, however, does not say that any person with a disability would be affected. It is much more narrow. It says people who are unable to deal with their own finances ― requiring a trustee to administer them ― and are unfit because of a disability stemming from a mental problem would have their information sent to the NICS. They could also appeal. People whose mental issues do not stem from their Social Security disability are not included.

“If we do not find an individual to be disabled based on a mental impairment, he or she has not met the reporting requirements and we will not report them to the NICS,” the Social Security Administration explained in releasing the rule.

Democrats see little but hypocrisy by Republicans and a desire to assuage the gun lobby.

“The Republicans are so hypocritical on this issue,” said Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who became an outspoken critic of gun violence after the Sandy Hook massacre in his state. “They constantly say we should be enforcing existing law, and then they are, at the same time, rewriting the law so that fewer people will be put on the criminal background check system.”

Indeed, Grassley is one of the many Republicans who have argued that focusing on the mentally ill and denying guns to people who should not get them is the best route to reducing gun atrocities. He proposed legislation to improve the NICS just last year.

“A database is only as good as the data it contains, with accuracy and completeness being paramount,” he said in proposing a measure to improve the NICS. “This database needs improvement. In that vein, my amendment requires that agencies containing relevant records make their submission to NICS a priority and provides specific guidance that federal courts are to upload their records to NICS forthwith.”

One federal agency that would no longer be able to upload their records forthwith is the Social Security Administration. One facet of the Congressional Review Act is it specifies that an agency may not write a new rule that is substantially similar to one Congress tossed out. It would likely mean that no rule will be approved soon.

Murphy found the circumstance appalling.

“I don’t know why we think that somebody who literally can’t manage their own financial affairs could be a responsible gun owner,” he said. “I hope something truly awful doesn’t happen because of this.”

Murphy thought there could be a political price to pay.

“In the end, they’re going to do what the gun lobby asks them to do,” Murphy said. “I’m sure that 90 percent of their constituents don’t think that people who are seriously mentally ill should be able to buy a gun, yet that’s what they’re voting to do.”

The repeal vote is set for Wednesday morning. President Donald Trump is expected to sign it

Seth Meyers Rips Trump For Ridiculous Mar-A-Lago Weekend

Seth Meyers could not get enough of news reports detailing how President Donald Trump spent Saturday evening at his private club, Mar-a-Lago.

Photos posted to social media appeared to show Trump dining on the club’s patio while reviewing intelligence reports on a North Korean missile launch with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

The “Late Night” host pointed out how Trump didn’t let a breaking national security incident ruin his night — from smiling at a camera while seemingly reviewing sensitive materials in an unsecured location, to crashing a nearby wedding and giving a speech.

Love Takes Action: An Astrological View

For the past two years, my HuffPost blogs have focused on astrology and the myriad ways this ancient art is helpful and meaningful for life today. I was galvanized by HuffPost’s call for articles under the heading #LoveTakesAction. It is an antidote to the swirling hate around us in these fractious and difficult times and I am happy to contribute. Personally, and in my astrology practice, I am encouraging people to focus on what they can do without becoming overwhelmed by the fray, the double talk, and polarization we find all around us.

The first category HuffPost suggested is ways people take action to show and even mobilize love. Each astrological sign takes action in different ways and hewing to your own resonant talents and ability will maximize your effectiveness and keep your energy balanced.

Aries: Leads the campaign and marches. He is a natural warrior for justice.

Taurus: Raises money for organizations that matter and promotes concrete goals towards tolerance and peace.

Gemini: Disseminates real information that encourages people to think and take action.

Cancer: Nurtures those who come across their path whether in a soup kitchen, shelter, or random encounters.

Leo: Dramatizes with very public and heartfelt performances which portray the world you want to live in.

Virgo: Analyzes and categorizes information to discern the actual facts and communicates this information clearly.

2017-02-13-1487000444-7693330-zodiacsigns.jpg

Libra: Engages with tact and diplomacy in relationships, action and dialogue that try to balance love and hate while taking a middle course.

Scorpio: Transforms him or herself with radical, personal actions that serve as a model for passionate tolerance of all the forms love can take.

Sagittarius: Teaches through conversation and ideas that laughter and good humor can overcome obstacles.

Capricorn: Organizes business structures based on responsible solutions and ecological solutions for all people.

Aquarius: Creates a circle of friends and common-minded people who act together on social projects.

Pisces: Works with charitable and religious organizations that reach out with compassion to the neediest.

These suggestions are calls to love action for each sign. I hope they resonate with you and enhance your quest for a more harmonious world.

Here is this 2017 take away.

As founder of Less Cancer, it has become increasingly and exceedingly clear that the focus for Cancer Prevention must call immediate attention, an urgent 911, to our polluted and sometimes cancer-causing drinking water.

We as citizens need all resources shifted to this purpose— to guarantee that (at the very least) our drinking water is safe. Having safe, clean water speaks to the most basic of human needs. It’s a no-brainer. And yet, this isn’t fully understood or appreciated in its urgency.

It is precisely such concerns that called and continue to call on our work at Less Cancer.

The Less Cancer work started when it was founded in 2004 under the name of Next Generation Choices Foundation. At the time the idea of cancer prevention was thought to be more of a crap shoot than the evidenced based science that more mainstream audiences now understand. Leading experts globally agree that over 50% of all cancers are preventable. Today we know that the evidenced based science indicates the best way to end cancer is to prevent it. Our goal with Less Cancer is to reduce all incidences of cancer— particularly regarding populations with increasing rates of cancer.

Current leadership suggests that any protections that would come with the legislation may soon be an effort of the past and that non- government organizations must work harder and smarter to garner support for work that assures safe drinking water for all.

While individuals can help protect themselves with water testing and filters, organizations must fight for the policy and legislation that will help protect all Americans from cancers related to drinking water. This is a priority on which we all must be steadfastly focused.

Remember when you didn’t think twice about using a drinking fountain?

If we are to prioritize preventing any cancers, we must at the very least address the carcinogens in drinking water. This also requires we remain stealthily focused. It involves information, details, and action.

While policy, legislation or regulation may not be a solution for every problem —for the case of safe drinking water, it is the pressing priority.

Personal action is not enough. Leadership from a government, non-government organizations and private entities must do all they can to provide creative solutions for ensuring that there will be safe drinking water for all.

Education Department Drops Web Site On Disabilities Act That Riled DeVos

A Department of Education web site explaining the rights of students under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act has vanished. That’s the same law that confounded new Education Secretary Betsy De Vos during her confirmation hearings.

DeVos dodged questioning about the law last month, insisting it was up to individual states on whether to grant disabled students their educational rights, even though it’s a federal law that applies across the nation.

New U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has also blasted the Disabilities Act for its “special treatment of certain children,” blaming it for the “acceleration in the decline of civility and discipline in classrooms across America.”

A link to the the web site ceased working shortly before DeVos took office, the Seattle Post Intelligencer reported.

The Department of Education site now attributes the broken link to “technical difficulties” and sends people instead to the 159-page text of the very technical, complicated statute. The department site also lists available special education programs.

The Disabilities Act information site that has now vanished was established under George W. Bush’s administration as an aide for parents, students, teachers and school administrations to help them understand the rights of disabled students to an appropriate free public education under the law. The site was updated as modifications were passed and courts continued to interpret the law.

Washington Democratic Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, who both voted against DeVos’ confirmation, issued a statement Friday demanding to know why the information had been scrubbed.

“The Department’s failure to keep this critical resource operational makes it harder for parents, educators, and administrators to find the resources they need to implement this federal law and protect the rights of children with disabilities,” they said.

The Washington senators demanded  a “detailed timeline” of when the information was taken down, and when it will be restored.

They also criticized Donald Trump for not being an “advocate for disability rights [who] famously mocked the physical disability of a New York Times reporter who asked him a question at a news conference” during his presidential campaign.

During her confirmation hearings last month Sen. Tim Kaine (D.-Va.) quizzed DeVos on the law. DeVos responded that it was a “matter best left to the states.” Kaine then asked: “So some states might be good to kids with disabilities and other states might not be so good and, what then, people can just move around the country if they don’t like how kids are being treated?” DeVos again repeated that it’s an issue “best left to the states,” apparently unaware of how federal law works.

Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), who has a son with special needs, clarified that the act is a federal civil rights law, adding: “So do you stand by your statement a few minutes ago that it should be up to the state whether to follow it?”

DeVos responded: “I may have confused it.”

Jeff Sessions spoke out against the law in 2000 from the Senate floor when he was representing Alabama.

“We have created a complex system of federal regulations and laws that have created lawsuit after lawsuit, special treatment for certain children, and that are a big factor in accelerating the decline in civility and discipline in classrooms all over America. I say that very sincerely,” Sessions said.

Multi-billionaire Republican mega-donor DeVos was confirmed last Tuesday by a vote of 51-50. Her highly controversial confirmation required Vice President Mike Pence to vote to break a tie in the divided Senate. She has no experience in education and supports school vouchers and charter schools. She was blocked by protesters last week during her first visit to public school in Washington D.C.

There has been no response to the web site changes from DeVos.

Is It Angels Who Protect Social Entrepreneurs? Because Nobody Else Does…..

“Four corners to my bed

Four Angels round my head

One to watch, one to pray,

And two to take all fears away!”

When I was a child I would recite this rhyme before going to bed. Those were the days when we would sleep beneath the stars. Sometimes clouds and trees would take menacing shapes in the dark. I would shut my eyes tightly and think of the Angels protecting me and be comforted and drift into sleep.

Now it seems the Angels are back again.

Life was tough indeed when I took a conscious decision to establish Operation ASHA. My aim was clear- that of providing health solutions to the poorest of the poor. Suddenly life changed. From a successful doctor in an upscale fancy private hospital I became a foot soldier trudging long miles in shanty towns and villages. My appearance changed. I went from stiletto heels to sturdy walking shoes. I started looking unkempt and shabby, initially a deliberately cultivated look to be accepted by those whom I serve, and later a natural consequence of the kind of work I was doing.

People around me changed too. Many laughed. All were contemptuous. Most couldn’t understand why I would throw away a good income to start an NGO. Others accused me of exactly the opposite thing- of being desperate to make easy money, for isn’t that the reason why one starts an NGO in the first place? With two conflicting accusations being hurled at me at the same time, I wouldn’t know whether I was standing on my head or my heels.

And as for the uncertainty! The less I write about it the better. Words are not enough to describe the trials and tribulations I went through. Starting a social venture is bad enough, starting it without a sound financial plan to ensure sustainability is the height of absurdity. And putting your own savings in a social enterprise is the biggest financial folly one could ever commit. I thought my savings would last 5 years. They finished in one, like water trickling from a hole in a bucket. I had plunged headlong into choppy waters without the fear of drowning. Each day I managed to stay afloat was a miracle.

When you are a social entrepreneur, life is all about extremes. You swing from one end on the pendulum to the other. From the depths of despair you go to such euphoria that you are walking with your head in the clouds. There are days when everything goes wrong. You get sleepless nights wondering where the next round of funding is coming from, your best guy has been offered twice the salary by a rival foundation, and some government officer somewhere has absolutely refused to let you work in his fiefdom. Other days- you wake up and find yourself on top of the world for someone somewhere has recognised your work and your worth. One day you are accused of being a crook and a thief, next day, blasphemously, you are feted by the media as the next Mother Teresa. In 2014, the Schwab Foundation and the World Economic Forum selected me as Social Entrepreneur of the Year. I found myself rubbing shoulders with the Who’s Who of society and the hoi-polloi at Davos. I haven’t looked back since then.

But at all times there is an all-pervading undercurrent of anxiety. Social entrepreneurs thrive on the adrenalin rush created by the see-saw that is life. You may be fully sustainable, yet you can’t get over the feeling that you are like the wandering mendicants of yesteryears with a staff in one hand and a begging bowl in the other.

In this topsy-turvy world, few things happen to keep you going. Patients recover. Results are there for you to see. Children get back to school. Treated TB patients get back their jobs, and there’s money for food and to spare. Miraculously, funds start coming in time. Those that scoffed at you and laughed with derision give tolerant smiles. There’s an occasional pat on the back, a kind word. You go to bed happy and contented and you sleep well, for the Angels are back and hovering over you. And you know they are there for you and will protect you as they have done since childhood. For nobody else will.

Are Your Bedtime Habits Messing With Your Relationship?

Sleep impacts basically every aspect of our lives. Quality (and quantity) of shuteye keeps our mind and body in working order, and also plays an integral role in the success of our relationships. After all, irritability and crankiness from a lack of sleep aren’t exactly attractive qualities in a partner.

“If two people are feeling drained and worn down, they’re much less likely to respond to each other with caring support and love,” says Dr. Lee Land, a licensed psychologist based in Austin. “Without a doubt, sleep deprivation can lead to stress, tension and conflict in relationships.”

However, in addition to racking up those Zs, experts say what you and your sweetie do before bed can impact your relationship, too. We’ve teamed up with Sleep Number and consulted sleep and relationship professionals to find out how the most common bedtime habits of couples affect relationships.

Sleep Number®  beds are designed with couples in mind. Sleep Number® is committed to helping couples get their best possible sleep by creating beds that adjust on each side to your ideal level of firmness, comfort and support—your Sleep Number® setting. Add our DualTemp™ layer to heat or cool each side of the bed, and you can both sleep exactly the way you like.

Melissa McCarthy Goes Ballistic On ‘SNL’ To Slay Spicer Again

Melissa McCarthy’s White House press secretary Sean Spicer roared back to “Saturday Night Live” louder, angrier, more preposterous than ever  — and with a much bigger wad of chewing gum.

If Spicer himself thought it was time for “SNL” to tone down the mean, McCarthy only amped it up. She was even more explosive than ever as she attacked fake facts, extreme vetting, the Trump administration’s slam on Nordstrom’s, and scathingly mocked Spicer’s outlandish treatment of the media.

McCarthy’s barely contained “Spicey” struggled to control himself at the very start of a press conference in the cold open.

“Ok now I’m gonna’ open it up for questions and I’m probably gonna’ freak if you start asking stupid questions. Speaking of freaks and stupid ones, Glenn Thrush, New York Times, stupid hack, go,” McCarthy snapped.

When cast member Bobby Moynihan, playing Thrush, asked about the court decision against Trump’s travel ban, a furious Spicey pointed skyward, saying: “You’re testing me, big guy.” Spicey vowed to take it all the way to the “People’s Court.” When Thrush explained that it’s not a real court, a livid Spicey shouts: “Don’t eff with me, Glenn.”

The most jaw-dropping schtick was McCathy’s demonstration of Donald Trump’s new “extreme vetting” procedure by the TSA at airports. For the “dumb babies” reporters, McCarthy dragged “dollies” out of demonstration boxes marked with the presidential seal, including an agent in camouflage and a Barbie doll who’s “a nice American girl, back from her dream vacation,” Spicey explains. “We know she’s OK because she’s blond. So she gets in.”

Then McCarthy disgustedly pulled out black-haired “Moana.” “Uh-oh. Whoah. Whoah. Slow your roll, honey,” Spicey cautioned. “We’re going to pat her down, then we’re going to read her emails, and if we don’t like her answers — WHICH WE WON’T — BOOM! Guantanamo Bay.”

Spicey ripped the media for failing to report on terrorist attacks, like the Bowling Green Massacre — “not the Kellyanne one, the real one” — as well as the “Horror at Six Flags, the Slaughter at Fraggle Rock, and the Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.”

Then there was the “light terrorism” when Nordstrom’s dropped Ivanka Trump’s products. “Nordstrom’s loss,” explained McCarthy’s Spicer,  showing off one of Ivanka’s “bangles” on his wrist: “It’s beautiful, it’s shimmery, it’s elegant, and at $ 39.99 it is unbelievably affordable. Don’t even get me started” on the shoes, McCarthy added, hoisting a high-heeled foot.

McCarthy wrapped up the press conference citing crime statistics that 80 percent of the people in Chicago have been murdered, shouting: “And that’s on you.” Spicey took a leaf blower to a reporter who challenged the statistics bragging that he’ was “blowing away dishonesty.”

But threatened podium bashes return from last week with the final question from a reporter: “Just mentally, are you OK?” But this time Spicey had a mobile podium to chase down journalists.

10 Things Truly Confident People Do Differently

2017-02-09-1486663049-3269831-10ThingsTrulyConfidentPeopleDoDifferentlyHP.jpeg

True confidence–as opposed to the false confidence people project to mask their insecurities–has a look all its own. One thing is certain: truly confident people always have the upper hand over the doubtful and the skittish because they inspire others and they make things happen.

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.”
- Henry Ford

Ford’s notion that your mentality has a powerful effect on your ability to succeed is seen in the results of a recent study at the University of Melbourne that showed that confident people earn higher wages and get promoted more quickly than anyone else.

Indeed, confident people have a profound impact on everyone they encounter. Yet, they achieve this only because they exert so much influence inside, on themselves.

We see only their outside. We see them innovate, speak their mind, and propel themselves forward toward bigger and better things.

And, yet, we’re missing the best part.

We don’t see the habits they develop to become so confident. It’s a labor of love that they pursue behind the scenes, every single day.

And while what people are influenced by changes with the season, the unique habits of truly confident people remain constant. Their focused pursuit is driven by these habits that you can emulate and absorb:

1. They speak with certainty. It’s rare to hear the truly confident utter phrases such as “Um,” “I’m not sure,” and “I think.” Confident people speak assertively because they know that it’s difficult to get people to listen to you if you can’t deliver your ideas with conviction.

2. They seek out small victories. Confident people like to challenge themselves and compete, even when their efforts yield small victories. Small victories build new androgen receptors in the areas of the brain responsible for reward and motivation. The increase in androgen receptors increases the influence of testosterone, which further increases their confidence and eagerness to tackle future challenges. When you have a series of small victories, the boost in your confidence can last for months.

3. They exercise. A study conducted at the Eastern Ontario Research Institute found that people who exercised twice a week for 10 weeks felt more competent socially, academically, and athletically. They also rated their body image and self-esteem higher. Best of all, rather than the physical changes in their bodies being responsible for the uptick in confidence, it was the immediate, endorphin-fueled positivity from exercise that made all the difference.

4. They don’t seek attention. People are turned off by those who are desperate for attention. Confident people know that being yourself is much more effective than trying to prove that you’re important. People catch on to your attitude quickly and are more attracted to the right attitude than what, or how many, people you know. Confident people always seem to bring the right attitude.

Confident people are masters of attention diffusion. When they’re receiving attention for an accomplishment, they quickly shift the focus to all the people who worked hard to help get them there. They don’t crave approval or praise because they draw their self-worth from within.

5. They don’t pass judgment.
Confident people don’t pass judgment on others because they know that everyone has something to offer, and they don’t need to take other people down a notch in order to feel good about themselves. Comparing yourself to other people is limiting. Confident people don’t waste time sizing people up and worrying about whether or not they measure up to everyone they meet.

6. They get their happiness from within. Happiness is a critical element of confidence, because in order to be confident in what you do, you have to be happy with who you are. People who brim with confidence derive their sense of pleasure and satisfaction from their own accomplishments, as opposed to what other people think of their accomplishments.

7. They listen more than they speak.
People with confidence listen more than they speak because they don’t feel as though they have anything to prove. Confident people know that by actively listening and paying attention to others, they are much more likely to learn and grow. Instead of seeing interactions as opportunities to prove themselves to others, they focus on the interaction itself, because they know that this is a far more enjoyable and productive approach to people. If you struggle with this, emotional intelligence training can help.

8. They take risks. When confident people see an opportunity, they take it. Instead of worrying about what could go wrong, they ask themselves, “What’s stopping me? Why can’t I do that?” and they go for it. Fear doesn’t hold them back because they know that if they never try, they will never succeed.

9. They aren’t afraid to be wrong. Confident people aren’t afraid to be proven wrong. They like putting their opinions out there to see if they hold up because they learn a lot from the times they are wrong and other people learn from them when they’re right. Self-assured people know what they are capable of and don’t treat being wrong as a personal slight.

10. They celebrate other people’s successes.
Insecure people constantly doubt their relevance, and because of this, they try to steal the spotlight and criticize others in order to prove their worth. Confident people, on the other hand, aren’t worried about their relevance because they draw their self-worth from within. Instead of insecurely focusing inward, confident people focus outward, which allows them to see all the wonderful things that other people bring to the table. Praising people for their contributions is a natural result of this.

Love Needs To Be Remembered, Restored and Renewed

It’s that time of the year and love is in the air! Everywhere we see red hearts beaming from cards and boxes of chocolates, while a dozen roses just doesn’t have quite the right impact if they are yellow.

Every day we can read about the importance of love, how to get more of it, how to be the best at it, how to make it work, how to keep it alive, how to let go if it doesn’t work, and how to trust it and start the process all over again. Love appears to be the most important topic on our minds (along with elections, immigrants and teenage acne, to name but a few).

Learning to open the heart, to listen to, respect and trust what we feel, is one of life’s most powerful teachings. For the heart is more than just the center of love, it is also the center of our being, the place we point to when we talk about ourselves. When we say, “you have touched my heart” we are really saying “you have touched the deepest part of my being.”

We don’t have to go in search of love, or fear giving away so much that we have none left. We can never lose love; we can only lose sight of it. Love could not happen if it was not already an integral part of who we are. How can we lose what is our nature? How can we be left with nothing when love is the source of all life?

However, love rarely flows smoothly. We all experience conflicts, hurt or loss, and if the pain is too big to deal with we lock it away inside. This serves to lock us out of our heart. And when we become isolated from love we become mistrustful, uncaring, shallow, hateful, prejudiced and fearful.

Fear closes the heart so we can’t feel love, as when we close our arms and pull back in defense. Love comes from the open heart, when we open our arms wide to embrace another.

All this means that love needs to be remembered, restored and renewed. We remember by holding love close and feeling its presence; we restore those places where love has been forgotten or ignored; and we renew it by being aware of love in every moment.

The Indian government invited us to speak at a yoga conference being held in Pondicherry, in southern India.
When it was Ed’s turn to speak he talked about the beauty and awesome power of unconditional love. A man in the audience raised his hand.
“Please sir,” he said. “What is this love that you speak of? How do I get this love? Where can I find it?”
Ed replied: “You awake in love, you bathe in love, you eat in love, you walk in love, and you live in love. Love is within you; it is your true nature; it is who you really are.”
“Oh sir,” the man said, “You have all the right answers!”

Comedian Jim Jefferies Tears Into Piers Morgan For Defending Donald Trump

Australian comedian Jim Jefferies blasted Piers Morgan for championing President Donald Trump as the “Real Time with Bill Maher” panel got heated on Friday.

Jefferies used explicit terms after the British TV personality took issue with Trump’s controversial travel ban being called “a Muslim ban.”

Morgan retorted by accusing Jefferies of whipping up hysteria. But Jefferies didn’t let up. “This is what you do, Piers. You say, ‘He hasn’t done this, he hasn’t done that, he’s not going to do all these things.’ Give him a fucking chance, mate. Hitler didn’t kill the Jews on the first day, he worked up to it, mate.”

When Morgan dubbed his verbal attack as “ridiculous,” Jefferies responded by flipping him off. “You just like that you won ‘The Apprentice’ and you have a famous friend, mate. That’s all you fucking like,” he added.

Does Your Vision for Your Life Cause You to Look Up…or Down?

“A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a Cathedral.” ~ Antone de Saint-Exupery

Several years ago, while in Barcelona, Spain, I had the opportunity to visit Catalan architect, Antonio Gaudi’s, one-of-a kind, “Sagrada Família.” While not officially a “cathedral” because it is not yet the seat of a Bishop, it is often thought of as such because it stands as high or higher than many ancient cathedrals. What is unique about the structure is that, while Gothic in design, it is also very “Art Nouveau” and unlike any other cathedral ever built; it is one-of-a-kind, in a class of its own. If you have ever seen pictures of it you’ll understand why I call it one of a kind. I encourage you to Google “Sagrada Família” and see for yourself–you’ll be rather stunned.

Gaudi designed and took over the construction of the project in 1883 and, the amazing thing is, to this day, it is still a work in progress. It stands higher than many skyscrapers; scaffolding and huge mechanical cranes loom in the skyline. The completion of the project is tentatively set for 2026, the centennial of Gaudi’s passing. It is said that he devoted the best of his years to the project, and at the time of his death at age 73 in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete. Can you imagine holding such a grand vision and not living to see it come to full fruition?

One-hundred and twenty-eight years after his vision was cast, I humbly stood at the base of this monolithic structure and gazed skyward wondering how much more had to be done to complete his vision. My mind raced back to the year 1883 when there was little more than barren land and rocks in that spot and I imagined him standing there, looking up, seeing his masterpiece in its completed form. That’s what visionaries do–they see their dream in its completed form long before it is realized in the material world. The transformation of concrete and rocks into a cathedral happened before Gaudi’s workers ever broke ground…and the fact that they are still working on the manifestation of it proves it was a very big vision.

Do you have a vision for your life and, if so, how big is it? Can you see yourself living that life now, even if the outer manifestation of it isn’t yet visible? While many say you have to see it to believe it, others are saying, you have to believe it to see it. Which are you? This is where and when the foundation for a life worth living is established. The practice is to contemplate your life as Gaudi contemplated his cathedral–as a completed idea in the creative Mind of a Universe that knows no limitations. In other words, the sky really is the limit; the only caveat is that this creative Mind is waiting for you to upload the design blueprints known as your belief system. What is your vision for your life? Are you looking up, or looking down? Be mindful of where your predominate thoughts go because, whether you are aware of it or not, that is the design plan you are uploading.

Clearly, Gaudi believed in his vision, so much so that it had no alternative but to become a reality, even years after his passing. That is a powerful vision when it takes on a life of its own. Turning a pile of rocks into a cathedral isn’t difficult once you have the vision–the Universe conspires to support you in your vision if you are willing to stand in it, own it and act on it. We are all visionaries–that is to say, we each hold in our mind a vision for our life; what it can or can’t be, might or might not be, or, will or won’t be. So the question really isn’t, do you have a vision for your life–if you are alive you have a vision. The real question is, what is your vision? Are you looking down at the rocks or up to the sky? Remember, the Universe is listening and it is already uploading your blueprints.

Peace, Dennis

Teen Voted ‘Best Dad’ For Taking His Sister To Father-Daughter Dance

A big brother stepped up when his little sister needed him most.

On Feb. 4, Mohammad Hasher, a 17-year-old who lives Michigan, woke up to find his 6-year-old sister, Noor, sitting on the couch wearing a peculiar outfit.

It was 10 a.m., and she wasn’t in her pajamas but instead wore a dress. The first-grader also looked upset.

“I was like, ‘Noor what in the world are you doing?’” Mohammad told the Huffington Post.

Noor told her brother that there was a big father-daughter dance at her school that night, and she wanted to go, but couldn’t. Mohammad told HuffPost that their parents got divorced in November, and their father hasn’t spoken to them since then. His absence has been really rough on the family, especially for Noor, who decided she was going to wear a dress that day anyway, even if she couldn’t go to the dance.

Mohammad made an immediate decision.

I told her I’d take her. And her face lit up! It was so cute.”
Mohammad Hasher, an awesome big bro

“I told her I’d take her,” he said. “And her face lit up! It was so cute.”

Later that afternoon, Mohammad took Noor shopping to make sure she looked her very best that night. He bought her a new dress, socks and shoes and brought her to a salon to get her hair done.

That night the siblings went to the dance and had a blast. Noor even got a box of candy when Mohammad won the title of “Best Dad” at the dance.

But that wasn’t Mohammad’s favorite part of the night.

“Seeing my sister do the Whip/Nae Nae was pretty cool,” he said.

The dance also gave Mohammad a serious case of the feels.

“The night was awesome,” he said. “It filled my heart with happiness seeing her dance with so much joy and have fun with all of her friends.”

Mohammad said his sis thanked him with a huge hug at the end of the night.

Touched by the experience, he posted pictures of their sweet soiree on Twitter:

”Got to take my baby sister to her first daddy daughter dance the other night,” he tweeted. “Sorry you don’t have a dad but I’ll always be there for you.”

The post soon went viral with over 104,000 likes and 25,000 retweets.

Mohammad feels that the night taught him a valuable lesson — that it’s the little things that make the biggest impact.

“It’s always important to be there for someone when you get the opportunity,” he said. “Especially family!”

Seth Meyers Calls Out Donald Trump’s Silence On The Quebec Shooting

Kellyanne Conway, an adviser to Donald Trump, claimed Tuesday that the president hadn’t commented on the recent Quebec mosque shooting because he “doesn’t tweet about everything.”

But “Late Night” host Seth Meyers isn’t convinced about her explanation for Trump’s continued silence on the Jan. 29 attack allegedly carried out by white French-Canadian Alexandre Bissonnette, which claimed six lives.

“Oh, he doesn’t tweet about everything?” Meyers said on Thursday’s broadcast of the show. “It sure feels like he does!”

To prove his point, Meyers then took some time out for a drink as a list of topics Trump has previously tweeted about scrolled on the screen:

Can a dying patient be a healthy person?

By Richard Gunderman, Indiana University and James W Lynch, University of Florida

The news was bad. Mimi, a woman in her early 80s, had been undergoing treatment for lymphoma. Her husband was being treated for bladder cancer. Recently, she developed chest pain, and a biopsy showed that she had developed a secondary tumor of the pleura, the space around one of her lungs. Her oncology team’s mission was to share this bad news.

Mimi’s case was far from unique. Each year in the U.S., over 1.6 million patients receive hospice care, a number that has been increasing rapidly over the past few years. What made Mimi’s case remarkable was not the grimness of her prognosis but her reaction to it.

When the members of the team walked into Mimi’s hospital room, she was lying in bed holding hands with her husband, who was perched beside her on his motorized wheelchair. The attending oncologist gulped, took a deep breath, and began to break the news as gently as he could. Expecting to meet a flood of tears, he finished by expressing how sorry he was.

To the team’s surprise, however, no tears flowed. Instead Mimi looked over at her husband with a broad smile and said, “Do you know what day this is?” Somewhat perplexed, the oncologist had to admit that he did not. “Today is very is special,” said Mimi, “because it was 60 years ago this very day that my Jim and I were married.”

The team members reacted to Mimi with astonishment. How could an elderly woman with an ailing husband who had just been told that she had a second, lethal cancer respond with a smile? Compounding the team’s amazement, she then went on to share how grateful she felt for the life she and her husband had shared.

Mimi thanked the attending oncologist and the members of the team for their care, remarking how difficult it must be to deliver bad news to very sick patients. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, Mimi was expressing sympathy for the people caring for her, exhibiting a remarkable generosity of spirit in the face of a grim disease.

The members of the team walked out of Mimi’s room shaking their heads in amazement. Once they reached the hallway, the attending physician turned and addressed the group: “Mimi isn’t the only person in that room with cancer, but she is surely the sickest. And yet,” he continued, to nods all around, “she is also the healthiest of any of us.”

“Be thine own palace, or the world’s thy jail.”
- John Donne

Disease need not define us

Mimi’s reaction highlights a distinction between disease and illness, the importance of which is becoming increasingly apparent. Simply put, a body has a disease, but only a person can have an illness. Different people can respond very differently to the same diagnosis, and those differences sometimes correspond to demographic categories, such as male or female. Mimi is a beautiful example of the ability to respond with joy and gratitude in the face of even life’s seemingly darkest moments.

Consider another very different patient the cancer team met with shortly after Mimi. Ron, a man in his 40s who had been cured of lymphoma, arrived in the oncology clinic expecting the attending oncologist to sign a form stating that he could not work and therefore qualified for disability payments. So far as the attending knew, there was no reason Ron couldn’t hold a job.

Ron’s experience of disease was very different from Mimi’s, a phenomenon familiar to cancer physicians. Despite a dire prognosis, Mimi was full of gratitude. Ron, by contrast, though cured of his disease and apparently completely healthy, looked at his life with resentment, even anger. He felt deeply wronged by his bout with cancer and operated with a sense that others should do what they could to help make it up to him.

Mimi was dying but content with her life. Ron was healthy but filled with bitterness. Both patients had the same diagnosis – cancer – but the two human beings differed dramatically, and so too did their illness experiences. Mimi felt blessed by 60 years of a good marriage, while Ron saw in his cancer just one more example of how unfair life had been to him.

“Death be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so…”
- John Donne

The real meaning of health

When the members of the cancer team agreed that Mimi was the healthiest person in the room, they were thinking of health in terms of wholeness or integrity. In fact, the word health shares the same source as the word whole, implying completeness or fullness. Ron felt repeatedly slighted, but Mimi looked at life from a perspective of abundance.

A full life is not necessarily marked by material wealth, power over others, or fame. Many people who live richly do so modestly and quietly, never amassing fortunes, commanding legions, or seeing their picture in the newspaper. What enriches their lives is not success in the conventional sense but the knowledge that they have done their best to remain focused on what really matters.

Mimi easily called to mind many moments when she and those she cared about shared their company and their love. Any sense of regret or sorrow over what might have been quickly gave way to a sense of gratitude for what really was, still is, and will be. Her outlook on life was shaped by a deep conviction that it had a meaning that would transcend her own death.

When someone has built up a life ledger full of meaningful experiences, the prospect of serious illness and death often do not seem so threatening. For Mimi, who had lived most of her days with a keen awareness that they would not go on forever, death’s meaning had been transformed from “Life is pointless” to “Make every day count.”

Mimi regarded the prospect of dying as a lens through which to view the meaning of life. She saw her illness as another adventure through which she and Jim would pass. Death would separate them, but it would also draw them closer together, enabling them to see more clearly than ever how much their love meant to them.

From Mimi’s point of view, death is not a contaminant, fatally introduced to life at its final stage. Instead death is a fire that burns away all that is not essential, purifying a person’s vision of what is most real and most worth caring about. Though not happy to be ill, Mimi was in a profound sense grateful for death. Her sentiments echo those of the poet John Donne:

“One short sleep past and we wake eternally:
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.”

Tom Price Confirmed As Health Secretary In Blow To Obamacare

By Susan Cornwell

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate voted on Friday to confirm Representative Tom Price as the top U.S. healthcare official, putting a determined opponent of Obamacare in position to help President Donald Trump dismantle the healthcare law.

The Senate voted 52-47 to approve the conservative Georgia Republican and orthopedic surgeon as the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), a massive department with an annual budget of more than $ 1 trillion.

In his new job, Price will have authority to rewrite rules implementing the 2010 Affordable Care Act, as Obamacare is officially called. Price could move quickly to rework Obamacare regulations while waiting for Republicans in Congress to keep their pledge to scrap the law entirely.

Republicans, who have the majority in Congress, are trying to craft a replacement for Obamacare but have not agreed on one. Twenty million Americans gained health insurance under the law.

Price’s nomination was dogged by questions about his trading in hundreds of thousands of dollars in health company stocks while working on healthcare legislation. Democrats boycotted the committee vote on his nomination, saying he had made misleading statements about shares he bought. Price says his actions were legal and ethical.

A member of the House of Representatives since 2005 and currently chairman of the budget committee, Price is the author of legislation to repeal Obamacare and replace it with age-adjusted tax credits for the purchase of health insurance.

Democrats criticized Price for his stock trading as well as his opposition to Obamacare, his ideas about restructuring the Medicare program for the elderly, and his support for cutting federal funds to Planned Parenthood, a women’s healthcare organization that provides abortions.

The Department of Health and Human Services oversees Medicare and Medicaid, the government health insurance program for the poor. It also encompasses the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration.

Samantha Bee Thanks CNN For ‘Feeding’ Kellyanne Conway To Jake Tapper

Samantha Bee was glued to CNN on Tuesday.

From Jake Tapper’s fiery exchange with President Donald Trump’s adviser, Kellyanne Conway, to a sensible debate over healthcare between Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Bee was stunned that the network had become utterly watchable.

“I know! We couldn’t believe it, either,” Bee said on Wednesday’s broadcast of “Full Frontal.”

After hailing CNN for “feeding” the “flaxen-haired fountain of lies” Conway into Tapper’s cage, Bee praised the news host for his comprehensive takedown of Trump’s aide, during which he repeatedly used the term “falsehood.”

“Damn, Jake. Wow, I didn’t think CNN let you use the f-word on the air,” quipped Bee.

Is America Still A Nation of Immigrants?

The letter below was originally written after 9/11 as an open letter to a relative of mine who had worries about migrating to America. But it feels that it is especially relevant to our time. So here it is, revised.

Dear Cousin,

What is it like to be an immigrant in America these days? Is it still worth coming, you ask, and is the American dream still possible?

Your questions gave me pause. Who from Vietnam, after all, would have thought to ask them a few years back? Didn’t the American dream, or rather the dream of coming to America, cause the movement of millions in our homeland, and stir the soul of many millions more? It breaks my heart then to hear that you might not come. It is to me the worst news yet about my adopted country.

Yet it’s undeniable. The nation of immigrants is turning its back on immigrants once more. The immigrant’s hold on American soil has become increasingly tenuous. Even citizens now face a barrage of hate speech and many are being attacked in a rising wave of hate crimes. In schools, white students scream “build the wall” at their classmates who are Mexicans or Muslims.

“Build the wall” has become a racist mantra chanted by many around the country against non-whites.

2017-02-08-1486590726-9013476-gop2016trumpjpeg950be.jpg

Cousin, have you heard the metaphor of the canary in the coal mine? When it stops singing, it means the oxygen has run out, providing a warning to all.

In America, and in the context of a free and open society, often the immigrant is that canary. In economic down times he is often the first to be blamed. And amid the ongoing US war against terrorism, he is fast becoming a scapegoat.

After the 2016 election that ushered in Donald Trump as President of the United States, many hate-crime related incidents occurred in which the President’s name was invoked by the perpetrators, as if to sanction the violence and verbal abuse.

In the name of protection and security, immigrants’ rights are being eroded as I write. Foreign students and workers tremble. I’ve seen an old South Asian man whose hands shook at the airport when he gave his green card to immigration officers, fearing sudden arrest and deportation. I know an undocumented college student at Berkeley — he was brought to the US when he was three years old — who now fakes his address on any application for fear of being deported.

2017-02-08-1486590339-421738-H05_Racist_Trump_USA.jpg

‘I have my hopes’

Yet I have my hopes. Americans rallied at airports in protest when Trump signed an executive order to keep certain groups of people out of the country, including green card holders. The protest against the new tyranny is strong and ongoing. I have hope to that the damage Trump is creating both at home and abroad can be mitigated by his growing unpopularity. After all, he is dismantling international institutions that have been in place since World War II, potentially returning the world to a state of competing nations with hard borders, high tariffs, trade wars, and gun boat diplomacy, turning against the forces of globalization.

And worse, in turning against America’s liberal values and our identity as a nation of immigrant, we are losing our strength in diversity.

Over the years I find it beneficial to look at this country through two different lenses: America versus the United States. The United States is a sovereign nation with permanent interests that is currently waging a war on terrorism. And it will trample upon innocents in its path, be it at home or abroad, if need be, in order to win it. In the process, the newcomer to this country, one without a voice and resources, often becomes collateral damage.

America, on the other hand, has everything you and I ever dreamed of: transparency, freedom, democracy, opportunity, due process, fair play and the promise of progress. America is where you work hard and earn respect.

The two versions exist in a kind of complex dance. In good times, America leads. In bad times, America is forgotten and the United States dances alone. These days, I fear that to be a patriotic immigrant is to love the ideals of America despite what the United States is doing in the name of security.

While I understand the logic of permanent interests, if America is destroyed in the process, then what is the use? And as far as I am concerned the only good patriotism is a civilized one. Blind patriotism always leads to bloody ends. To be patriotic is to dare ask questions. Must rights be abused in the name of security? Is it truly the country’s interest to demonize its minorities and its newcomers?

Dear cousin, I hope I haven’t completely frightened you, but the situation requires honesty. To reach American shores these days is a much more difficult undertaking, with fewer ready-made promises on the horizon.

I still want you to make this difficult journey, but you must be prepared for the challenges ahead. And I’ll let you in on a secret about this American dream you spoke so fondly of: it is you who must renew it. Without you, who dream the American dream, the country is in danger of becoming old. Without your energy, we would weaken. Even if we don’t know it yet, we all desperately need to be reborn through your eyes.

So, is the American Dream still alive? No, cousin, not really. Not without you at the table. Not without you prospering. Not without you.

Judge Blocks $48 Billion Anthem-Cigna Merger

(Reuters) – A federal judge on Wednesday ruled against U.S. health insurer Anthem Inc’s proposed $ 54 billion merger with smaller rival Cigna Corp, derailing an unprecedented effort to consolidate the country’s health insurance industry.

The U.S. Justice Department sued in July to stop Anthem’s purchase of Cigna, a deal that would have created the largest U.S. health insurer by membership, and Aetna Inc’s planned $ 33 billion acquisition of Humana.

The merger would have worsened an already highly concentrated market and is likely to raise prices, Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia said while issuing the ruling against Anthem’s deal.

Last month, a different U.S. judge ruled against Aetna’s proposed deal for Humana.

Government antitrust officials argued that both deals would lead to less competition and higher prices for Americans. The acquisitions would have reduced the number of large national U.S. insurers from five to three.

Jackson had separated the Justice Department’s case into two trials. Her ruling focused only on the first one in which the Justice Department argued that the tie-up would hurt the ability of large national employers to get competitive rates for the health coverage they provide workers.

The second trial considered overlaps in the two insurers’ business selling health benefits to individuals, and administering Medicare Advantage coverage to the elderly.

Anthem argued that there was enough competition because large companies with more than 5,000 employees often used multiple smaller players in the national market, but the judge disagreed.

“Regional firms and new specialized ‘niche’ companies that lack a national network are not viable options for the vast majority of national accounts, and they will not ameliorate the anticompetitive effects of this merger,” Jackson wrote.

Cigna intends to carefully review the opinion and evaluate its options in accordance with the merger agreement, it said in a statement.

An Anthem spokeswoman declined to comment on the matter.

PROTECTING CONSUMERS

Acting Assistant Attorney General Brent Snyder of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division said the ruling had prevented American consumers from facing higher health insurance premiums and less innovation.

Bill Baer, who was head of the Justice Department’s antitrust division when it decided to sue to block both the insurance deals but has since left the agency, also hailed the decision. “Together with the decision on Aetna and Humana, this preserves five large national providers of critically important health insurance products,” he said.

The fifth player, UnitedHealth Group Inc. <UNH.N> was not involved in the deals.

Some Wall Street analysts expect all four of the companies to now move on, although Aetna and Humana have not committed to doing so. Their deal expires Feb. 15.

“The likelihood of success in an appeal would be very low,” said Matthew L. Cantor, a partner in the law firm of Constantine Cannon in New York. He noted points in the judge’s order about the concentrated national market, the high barrier to entry for competitors, and the companies’ roles as direct competitors.

The deals were announced at a time when former President Barack Obama’s national healthcare reform law was fully in place and the four insurers were growing in the individual insurance market it established. The insurers said new costs, from higher taxes to investments in new Obamacare products, were driving their need for scale.

That landscape is less certain now. Aetna and Humana have cut back Obamacare enrollment for 2017 after losses, and President Donald Trump and fellow Republicans are weighing a “repeal and replace” path for Obamacare.

More deals may be in the offing, JPMorgan analyst Gary Taylor said in a research note. “Given Anthem and Cigna’s pursuit of Humana in 2015, we think new potential combinations could emerge.” He does not expect shares in either Anthem or Cigna to move given that investors had expected this ruling.

Cigna is entitled to receive from Anthem a $ 1.85 billion break-up fee if the deal fails to win regulatory approval, according to the merger agreement. The agreement also requires Cigna to have put forth its best effort on that front.

But Anthem and Cigna disagreed about the deal in court, Jackson wrote in her order, with Cigna refusing to sign off on Anthem’s interpretation of how the companies could garner savings.

Anthem is the largest member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and operates BCBS plans in 14 states. It and said it could apply its discounts to Cigna members while Cigna said its collaborations with doctors would save money.

Pre-merger integration was stalled and incomplete, the judge said.

#ShePersisted Becomes New Battle Cry After Senate Silences Elizabeth Warren

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) unwittingly gave women a new rallying cry when he silenced Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Tuesday night.

“She was warned. She was given an explanation,” he said. “Nevertheless, she persisted.”

#ShePersisted almost immediately began trending on Twitter.

Warren had been attempting to read a letter written in 1986 by the late Coretta Scott King ― civil rights hero and widow of Martin Luther King Jr. ― that criticized Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), then a U.S. attorney who had been nominated for a federal judgeship.

McConnell invoked Rule XIX, which said: “No Senator in debate shall, directly or indirectly, by any form of words impute to another Senator or to other Senators any conduct or motive unworthy or unbecoming a Senator.” King’s letter argued that, during Sessions’ time as a prosecutor in Alabama, he “used the awesome power of his office to chill the free exercise of the vote by black citizens.”

Warren is now forbidden from speaking on the Senate floor as the body considers Sessions’ nomination for U.S. attorney general. But social media has been anything but silent as #ShePersisted became the new call to arms.

Seven Steps to Completely Turn Your Life Around This Year

How can I change my life completely in the next year or two? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Max Lukominskyi, CMO at Sliceplanner, on Quora:

Changing your life completely is a huge step that requires a major effort. Nonetheless, the result is worth the struggle. Commit to this 7-step challenge and you will arrive at the desired destination already next year:

Begin With The End In Mind. While making a decision to commit to something, take a moment to get it crystal clear what change you would like to experience and what kind of person you would like to become within the next year or two. Imagine how you achieve your goal and try to design a blueprint of how you are going to move towards your desired destination. Then you will know exactly what steps to take.

Declutter Your Life. Slow down and take some time to simplify your life. Get rid of the things that have always been holding you back. Get rid of the stuff that associates with the life you would like to change. Stop comparing yourself with others and prioritize your goals. Clear your mind from the unnecessary thoughts and create more space in your life for new pure energy and massive wins.

Master Your Mindset. Embrace the truth: Everything worth doing is going to be neither easy nor fast. It holds true for this challenge as well. Therefore, be ready to face tough obstacles and deal with the unexpected issues. Nonetheless, it doesn’t mean you cannot succeed. It only means you need to be ready. Stop doubting your strengths. Make the goal to change your life completely your priority. Become obsessed. And get down to work.

Start Small. Your life is a set of little seemingly innocuous decisions, choices and actions. The repeated ones constitute your daily habits. These are the ones that eventually shape your life and define your level of productivity and success. Start small and strive to develop a good habit attitude by breaking bad habits and developing only routines that are the perfect fit for the life you would like to live.

Grow 0.1% A Day. Whatever you want to achieve, try to approach that goal with the constant pace: 0.1% a day. Since your personal growth has a compounding effect, these seemingly trivial steps will eventually allow you to grow 37.78% a year and become multiple times better than you are now already in two years. Commit to continuous and consistent growth. Do the things that take you closer to your aspirations every single day.

Avoid Negative People. Your environment is crucial. The chances are that you are not likely to experience any change if you stay in the stagnant and not challenging environment. You need to surround yourself with people who are better, smarter, stronger and faster. Choose your environment wisely and avoid negative people who are always too pessimistic and skeptical towards your goals. Get around greatness and make sure the people who you hang out with are supportive and inspiring.

Leave Your Comfort Zone. No change will come if your stay within your area of ease and convenience. All the opportunities for growth are far beyond your comfort zone. Learn to leave it on the consistent basis and do the things that scare you. Very soon you will find out that the life in your discomfort zone is not that frightening but rather full of new earlier unfamiliar, interesting and exciting things that indeed take you closer to your desired aspirations. Expand your comfort zone – change your life.

It Appears Republicans Want To Tell Poor People How To Use Food Stamps

If you’re concerned that food stamp users might be buying too much soda and junk food, you share something in common with at least one member of Congress.

According to a report from Politico, Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas), chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, said Monday that he is concerned about the amount of soda that users of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are buying and plans to call a hearing on SNAP purchases.

Conaway’s concern, according to Politico, stems from data on the program released last fall by the Department of Agriculture.

That data found that SNAP households spent more on soft drinks than any other category of groceries. A front-page story in the New York Times last month characterized SNAP users as people who bought sodas and other sugar-sweetened soft drinks by the cartload.

The problem with that Times story, as The Huffington Post noted, is that it mischaracterized the USDA report’s main finding: There were “no major differences” in grocery purchases between households participating in SNAP and those that did not. In fact, the difference in soft-drink purchases between SNAP and non-SNAP households was a negligible 1.5 cents per dollar.

The Times story was widely panned by policy experts as well as groups including Media Matters for America and the Center for American Progress’ Talk Poverty project. Even the Times’ public editor, Liz Spayd, wrote that she sided with the readers who had criticized the piece, admitting that it “didn’t do much to advance the discussion” on the issue of so-called food stamps.

Still, the damage — potentially providing critics of the SNAP program with evidence that appeared to confirm their beliefs — may have already been done.

Some states are working on proposals to limit SNAP purchases to foods deemed to be healthful and are seemingly confident that the election of President Donald Trump and a change in leadership at the USDA will make the agency more amenable to tighter state-level SNAP rules.

Last week, a Republican-backed bill in Arkansas that would ban the use of SNAP benefits to buy products like soda and candy was approved by the state House of Representatives. A similar bill was introduced by a Republican lawmaker in Tennessee, though it was pulled a week later.

Last month, health officials in Maine cited the USDA data highlighted in the Times story as they announced a plan to ask the Trump administration for a waiver that would allow them to ban the purchase of soda and junk food through SNAP.

For Mary Mayhew, Maine’s commissioner of health and human services, an appointee of Republican Gov. Paul LePage, the study “confirmed our concerns,” she told WGME-TV, the CBS affiliate in Portland.

Similar restrictions are also backed by some public health advocates and groups like the American Medical Association. But anti-poverty groups say such changes unfairly target low-income people, may add to the stigma of using SNAP benefits and may do little to encourage healthful diets.

Trump’s nominee to lead the USDA, former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue, has not indicated any new direction for SNAP. And Republican leaders of the House Agriculture Committee stated last year, after completing a two-year evaluation of SNAP, that it had no plans to slash the program.

Still, food policy experts are anticipating changes.

Speaking on a panel at a Food Tank summit in Washington, D.C., last week, former USDA Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan said she expected to see efforts to either reduce SNAP spending or add restrictions to the program as debate on the 2018 farm bill, which includes funding for the program, begins.

Still, nothing is certain. Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) described the current atmosphere in Washington as “the foggiest crystal ball” she’s ever seen and noted that conservatives who have previously pushed for SNAP funding to be separated from other parts of the farm bill may have more influence in crafting the new legislation.

“The Heritage Foundation could write the entire farm bill,” Pingree quipped, referring to the conservative think tank.

Food stamps weren’t always controversial, particularly within the context of the farm bill. The program was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 and was long seen as a win-win for Republicans because it helped farmers’ bottom lines and Democrats because it helped the urban poor.

But criticism of food stamps isn’t new, either. Complaints about the program grew during the 1970s to the point where conservative politicians, such as President Ronald Reagan, who slashed the program dramatically, railed against “welfare queens” who relied on it.

No matter what happens with SNAP funding, supporters of the food stamp program say critics can’t deny its well-documented success at reducing hunger among low-income Americans. One study found that SNAP can reduce hunger among high-risk children by 20 percent

That success means that a decrease in funding of the program would lead to more hungry Americans, according to Craig Gundersen, a University of Illinois agriculture professor.

“Many government programs don’t work, but SNAP works and has been an amazing success,” Gundersen told HuffPost. “I can’t think of another program that is more successful at accomplishing its goals.”

In the meantime, SNAP advocates are buckling in for a fight.

“We don’t take anything for granted,” Ellen Vollinger, legal director at the Food Research and Action Center, told HuffPost. “We’re not making leaps of assumptions until we see what it is that actually gets put into play, but we are being very diligent to be prepared for any policy debate.”

Trevor Noah Explains Why Donald Trump Is Like The Knicks

“The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah thinks Donald Trump is very mad.

When Seattle-based judge James Robart put a nationwide block on the president’s week-old refugee ban on Friday, he basically “shut down” the Donald “like he was one of his own casinos,” Noah said on Monday.

The ruling against the executive order made Noah realize that Trump was pretty much the political version of the New York Knicks.

“They’re both from New York,” Noah said. “[They’re both] orange and [both always] find a way to lose on the court.”

Why You Need to Fire Your Inner Monday Morning Quarterback

2017-02-06-1486419171-9252521-shutterstock_148161395.jpg

It’s no surprise that all of the Monday morning quarterbacks have shown up in full splendor today, following the biggest comeback in Super bowl history. Full disclosure: I’m a lifelong New Englander, but promise not to say something like “Hellooooo, haters”, or “we’re wicked awesome” in a thick PAAHHK the CAAAH Boston accent between sips of Dunkin’ Donuts.

In case you didn’t know, a Monday morning quarterback (MMQB) is a person who criticizes, passes judgment, and offers hindsight solutions to problems. They are very easy to find today across talk radio, TV, and social media feeds.

They should’ve done this or that. Why on earth didn’t they see it? They made such a textbook mistake. It’s all SOOO obvious. OMG.

Psychology can help explain why hindsight bias is such a trap for us. That feeling that “we knew it all along” arises from our tendencies towards creating stories that make sense based on the information we have. Researchers Neal Roese and Kathleen Vohs suggest that our desire for closure makes us apt to promote a positive view of ourselves. We get all puffed up, even when the conclusions we draw are incorrect.

Hindsight bias can prevent us from learning from experiences, or taking a deeper dive into the forces at hand, and coming up with a more accurate analysis of what’s transpired.

Most of us are not professional sports players, with millions of eyes on us, but we’ve all faced our own versions of MMQB’s, jousting us with “I told you so’s” and “what were you thinking’s”. Worse, many of us struggle with our own pesky inner MMQB that constantly needles us through the play by play of our lives.

I should’ve never done that. Why didn’t I realize it at the time? How stupid can I be?

While reflecting on mistakes is a vital part of our growth and progress, all the ‘shoulding’ that comes from our inner MMQB can sabotage happiness and wellbeing. Here’s how to fire a reactive, overly critical MMQB, and replace with a more rational, wise one:

1. Silence your inner hater. Do you tend to call yourself names, instead of cutting yourself some slack? Do you take a disproportionate amount of blame in a situation that’s gone wrong? Do you feel a constant sense of under accomplishment, no matter how much you’ve done? These are red flags that your inner MMQB needs walking papers.

2. Review the tape. Do you think every move you’ve made has gone wrong? Do you see your mistakes as catastrophic with no room for learning? Your MMQB might be going purely off the amygdala, the mechanism in your brain that regulates fear responses. Take a needed break to regroup and revisit once the frontal lobe, the part of the brain responsible for reason, has time to review the play more accurately.

3. Stay agile. Do you feel a sense of dread and doom? Does it seem like there’s no way out? Stay on your toes, and be ready to pivot away from original conclusions you have drawn. Train your inner MMQB to rethink first glances, and check for new alternatives and approaches to the problems you face. Be on the lookout for opportunities to change directions. So much falls out of the realm of our control, and while we can’t always win, we can learn to adapt and stay in the game for the long haul.

Hindsight might not be as 20/20 as we’d like. If your inner MMQB has become obnoxiously full of unsolicited, negative advice, now is the time to fire and rehire one that is more rational, compassionate and nimble.

Snoring Sucks: 6 Couples Sound Off About This Noisy Nuisance

Imagine one minute that you’re soaring through dreamland, on the back of a magical dragon no less, and the next, you’re jerked awake by what sounds like a dying hippopotamus. It may be better if that irritating noise was, in fact, coming from a wild animal, but more often than not, it’s escaping from the gaping mouth of your snoozing significant other.

Snoring. It’s a problem that plagues more than 90 million Americans, according to sleep experts. Snoring can often be funny, and even somewhat cute at first, but a chronically sleep-deprived bunkmate is no laughing matter. That’s why we’ve partnered with Sleep Number to talk to real couples about how snoring affects their relationship and sleeping arrangements, and to learn the weird hacks they use to stay sane and snuggle on. Here’s what they had to say:

1. Maria and Jim ― Together 27 years, married for 17

Maria: “Jim snores like a slumbering bear. After years of putting up with the snorting and wheezing, I realized that when he wasn’t loud, he was often not breathing at all for several seconds. As a consequence of not breathing, he got fitted with a c-Pap (positive airway pressure) mask which helps him breathe properly while asleep. [The mask causes] its own issues if there is a light sleeper in the same bed. If it doesn’t seal properly to his face, it sounds like a teapot whistling in my ear at 3 a.m., and feels like someone blowing a steady stream of air into my eye ― if I happen to be facing him as I sleep.”

Jim: “Hey, she snores too!”

Maria: “I don’t know how he would know that since he always seems to be asleep. But if I do snore, I am sure my snores are soft and dainty.”

Tip: Experts estimate that sleep apnea affects more than 18 million American adults. If left untreated, it can lead to weight gain, memory problems, high blood pressure and other serious cardiovascular issues, so talk with your doctor if you think an undiagnosed sleep disorder could be keeping you from scoring your soundest Zs.

2. Sakura and Angela ― Together two years, engaged to be married

Sakura: “Angela snores so badly. She didn’t believe me, so I recorded her once, and it was ridiculous. She also talks in her sleep which is funny but very annoying when I want to sleep.”

Angela: “I would like to go on the record and say that I am so fortunate to have someone like Sakura who puts up with my snoring. From what she describes, it sounds awful. I wouldn’t even know if Sakura snores because I’m such a heavy sleeper, I can pretty much sleep through anything. She does drool, though. But that’s fine because we have separate pillows.”

Sakura: “I recently figured out how to make her stop snoring if she wakes me up: I massage and scratch her head until the snoring stops. If I only do it for a few minutes, she’ll start back up again right away. But if I massage for a while, I can stop it for pretty much the whole night, and she never wakes up during it.”

Tip: Change your sleeping position to curb snoring. Studies show that side sleepers are less likely to snore.

3. Bob and Carla ― Married for 19 years

Carla: One morning, when Bob woke up, he looked at me and said, ‘The snoring isn’t you! It’s Chester! All this time I thought you were snoring, but I didn’t want to say anything!’”

“Chester is our fat Shih Tzu, who at night always crawls into the empty section [of our] bookcase headboard and snores up a storm in our ears. I’d always known the snores were coming from the puppy, but apparently my kind and compassionate husband thought for years that he had a wife who snored like a truck driver.”

Tip: Sleeping with pets is cozy, but it can also prevent you from getting a great night’s sleep. If your pet is a sleep saboteur, it might be time to close your bedroom door and keep those furry snuggles to the daytime hours.

4. Rachel and Tom ― Together five years, married five months

Rachel: “Tom only snores when he’s had a little to drink.”

Tom: “It’s a lot harder to wake me up after a few beers, so I’m sure it’s annoying.”

Rachel: “It’s only a problem when he falls asleep on his back, then I have to wake him up and force him to switch over to his side so he’s not sleeping with his mouth open. Usually that does the trick.”

Tip: Because alcohol relaxes and narrows the upper airways, even a couple of beers before bed can lead to some serious snoring. Avoid drinking for at least four hours before you hit the sack to keep alcohol-induced snoring to a minimum.

5. Jase and Caroline ― Together three years, living together for two

Caroline: “I’m a crazy-light sleeper, so even ONE stuffy-nose snore from his side of the bed can wrench me out of sleep for the rest of the night. I once got so angry with him for snoring I plugged his nose until he woke up in a panic.”

Jase: “Yeah, that was mean. I thought I was drowning! Plus, she snores too, especially when she’s sick.”

Caroline: “There’s literally no way my snoring is as bad as his. And even if it is, it wouldn’t matter, because he can sleep through anything! I wake up if the cat jumps off the bed, Jase can sleep through a fire truck parade. When he gets going, I usually poke him as hard as I can and put in my headphones. Sometimes it works, sometimes I just lie there fuming until morning, and then spend the whole day being irrationally mad at him. It’s a process.”

Tip: Though it appears the science is still out on what makes someone a light sleeper or a heavy sleeper, those who claim to be light sleepers know it can be hard to rest easy. Investing in a pair of quality earplugs, noise-cancelling headphones, or a soothing sound machine can be a lifesaver for the light sleepers among us.

6. Noelle and Isak ― Together three years

Noelle: “I’ve been having some snoring issues lately, and I feel so bad about keeping him up.”

Isak: “It’s really not that bad at all. You only do it when you fall asleep on your back or when you’re sick. It’s not a bad snore. I like to call it a ‘cute lil dino snore.”

Tip: When you’re sick, you can stop even your cutest “dino” snores by slightly elevating your head while you sleep. Specially designed pillows and mattresses that elevate your head can help clear your your sinuses by preventing nostril-blocking mucus from pooling in your nasal cavities.

Snoring shouldn’t be a bedroom deal-breaker. That’s why Sleep Number offers the FlexFit™ adjustable base with Snore™ technology* to gently raise your partner’s head. Plus, Sleep Number  beds adjust on each side to your ideal level of firmness, comfort and support ― your Sleep Number setting. So couples sleep better together.

*May temporarily relieve common mild snoring in otherwise healthy adults. Partner Snore™ technology is available with Split King and FlexTop® King mattresses on FlexFit™ 2 and 3 adjustable bases.

WATCH: ‘Drunk And Racist’ Man Curses Out 4-Year-Old As He’s Booted From Train

A “drunk and racist” man was thrown off a train in the United Kingdom after ranting about a woman and her 4-year-old son in a scene caught on video.

Alexander MacKinnon pleaded guilty last week to a racially aggravated public order offense over the incident, which took place in December on a train from London to Glasgow, the Independent reported.

Sanaa Shahid was traveling with her 4-year-old son, Zayn, when she said MacKinnon asked how they got into first class.

You don’t deserve to be in first class,” he said, Shahid told the Daily Record. “You should be in common class. In fact, you shouldn’t be in this country at all.”

Shahid, an attorney, told the newspaper she has lived in Scotland all her life.

She said 10 to 12 people witnessed the incident but did not speak up as MacKinnon, also an attorney, accosted her and insulted her son.

So she began filming him.

In the clip, above, MacKinnon can be heard complaining into the phone about Shahid and saying “it’s my word against hers.”

That’s when a rail worker arrived.

“Now it’s not just your word against hers,” the Virgin Trains rail worker said. “It’s mine as well, because I heard it all.”

“Yea, I wanted you to,” the man replied.

“I’m not going to accept it,” the worker said. “You’re drunk and racist and you need to get off the train.”

MacKinnon can be seen later eating, drinking what appears to be wine straight from the bottle and ― after the train reaches the next station ― getting up to leave, but not without taking a parting shot at Shahid.

“You’re so wonderful, wasting police time, miss,” he said. “And your fucking son.”

On Twitter, Shahid publicly thanked the rail worker.

The BBC reports that MacKinnon was fined the equivalent of $ 1,440 and ordered to pay $ 62 in compensation to Shahid.

Hopefully MacKinnon’s substantial fine will make him think twice before unleashing such vitriol on other members of the public,” Mark Mellenthin, the investigating officer for the British Transport Police, told ITV.

How to Find a Love Relationship in 2017

2017-01-30-1485793965-3790320-RyanGoslingEmmaStone.jpeg
It’s a New Year and if you are open to finding a romantic love relationship, your horoscope could help you understand the kind of person who is most likely to make you happy and inspire your deepest loving feelings.

Did you know that your Moon Sign can tell you the type of person who will make you feel emotionally comfortable and secure on a day-to-day basis.

The Moon sign also indicates our habit patterns and gives us insights into who we can live with in harmony. After all, once the initial excitement of a new relationship wears off, we need to be with a partner who we can enjoy a happy domestic life.

While we want to find a partner we are emotionally comfortable, we also want to feel a deep love for them. That’s why our Venus Sign is important. It tells us who we will be romantically attracted to and find lovable.

When someone inspires our love, we can look beyond many of their flaws. For example, when they upset us, we may find ourselves saying, “He can really make me angry, but there is just something about him I love, even when he ticks me off!” (At the end of this article, you can learn how to find which sign your Moon and Venus are in your horoscope.)

Our Moon and Venus Tells Us About Our Emotional and Love Needs

After you learn the sign your Moon and Venus are in, look at the description below to learn about your emotional needs in a relationship and the qualities you need in another person to find them lovable. This information will help you understand the qualities of a person you will be attracted to as a romantic partner, and the type you’re most suited to have an intimate relationship of love and passion.

What If Your Moon or Venus are in Aries?

You’re attracted to a bold, independent type who assertively goes after what they want (especially if it’s you). They are especially appealing if they have an impulsive nature. You’re likely to respect and encourage them to be their own person. You are turned on if they are willing to compete with you in games or sports, especially if they are capable of giving you a good match (even though you want to win). A fiery, passionate person is who will excite you. You enjoy being pursued or even seduced by them.

What If Your Moon or Venus are in Taurus?

You’re attracted to an easy-going, earthy type who is affectionate and likes to cuddle and kiss. You’re especially drawn to them if they have a pleasant voice. You like a feminine female (or masculine male) and find the “scent of a woman” (or scent of man) arousing and sensual. It’s a turn on if they enjoy great food, enjoyable music, loves nature and the outdoors. You feel sensual pleasure and emotional comfort with a person who likes physical touch, affection and engaging in frequent passionate sex.

What If Your Moon or Venus are in Gemini?

You’re attracted to a witty, interesting person with a quick tongue, who stimulates your mind with great conversation, and doesn’t bore you. Great communication is what’s most important to you. You’re drawn to someone who is both a good talker and good listener. Curiosity keeps you interested, so a complex person intrigues and engages you. Words are important to you, so you are sexually aroused by them, if they are the type who will flirt with you; or tell you how they feel about you with words. You enjoy talking “dirty” in the bedroom.

What If Your Moon or Venus are in Cancer?

You’re attracted to a person who will comfort, care for you, and take care of your needs (i.e. who “mothers or fathers” you). It’s a plus if they reminds you of your mother. Sharing a home with a person in an intimate way makes you feel wanted and secure. You like the idea of being that person’s protector and taking care of them, too. The nostalgic part of you yearns for an “old-fashioned love relationship,” with a person who you can share a house and create a family. You’re sexually attracted to a woman with large breasts or a man with large pecs.

What If Your Moon or Venus are in Leo?

You’re attracted to someone who is striking or gorgeous and whose glamorous manner make you proud to be with them. The fact that they are a bit of a drama queen (or kind) is part of what you like. You’re easily enticed by that person if they flatter your ego with compliments and praise. You need a person who makes you feel admired and respected (and never criticizes). They must make you feel like a king (or queen) by lavishing lots of attention and affection on you in an out of bed.

What If Your Moon or Venus are in Virgo?

You’re attracted to a person who looks neat, well groomed and is conservatively dressed. You are drawn to someone if they are honest, intelligent, practical, modest and loyal. You look for the perfect person; if they are not perfect, you are open to fixing them to make them more perfect. You have the ability to fall in love with a person who becomes useful to you in ways that make them indispensable. You are turned sexually, if they are an earthy and skillful lover behind closed doors.

What If Your Moon or Venus are in Libra?

You’re attracted to a pretty woman or a handsome man who is charming and has a feminine or masculine look. While you seek harmony in a relationship, you enjoy an occasional argument or conflict from time-to-time to keep your relationship interesting. You’re not interested in a person who is rude or crude. You are very turned onto someone if they are sensuous and romantic. The type of person you seek enjoys lighting a candle, putting on some romantic music and curling up on a couch with you, which is their invitation to make love.

What If Your Moon or Venus are in Scorpio?

You’re attracted to an intense, passionate and strong-willed person who seems both mysterious and powerful. Your connection to them brings into play psychological power struggles where one or both of you vie for control. You only respect a partner who can stand up to your strong personality. You’re likely to test the person you are romantically attracted and demand absolute fidelity. Sexuality is important to your relationship, so you are enticed by the type of person who exudes a raw animal magnetism or an overly sexual appearance.

What If Your Moon or Venus are in Sagittarius?

You’re attracted to a person who is smart, honest and direct with a good sense of humor. They are especially appealing if they can be playful one minute and philosophical the next. You like a person who is adventurous, into the outdoors, even athletic. You may be especially attracted to a foreigner from another culture. You need a great deal of independence, so you seek a person who will give you your freedom. You enjoy platonic friendships and casual sex until you’re totally committed.

What If Your Moon or Venus are in Capricorn?

You’re attracted to a person (often younger) who you see as being socially acceptable, enhancing your status, and even boosting your career. Or, you may be attracted to a powerful career type (even an older one) who has attained great success. You are careful about taking emotional risks until you’re certain that person is seriously committed to you. You are turned on when they appear to be prim and proper in public but behind closed doors they are earthy and hot in bed.

What If Your Moon or Venus are in Aquarius?

You’re attracted to a person who is independent, free-spirited and can be your friend. It’s important to you that they be intellectually interesting, opened minded and willing to try doing things they’ve never done before. They are especially exciting if they seem rather unconventional, even offbeat. You’re attracted to them if they are an idealist and even a rebel. You are not interested in a person who is a drama-queen or drama-king. Your ideal person is sexually exciting because they willing to experiment when you make love.

What If Your Moon or Venus are in Pisces?

You’re attracted to a person who is kind, romantic and emotionally sensitive, even passive. Their caring nature makes you feel secure. That person is especially appealing, if they appear mysterious or confused, yet compassionate. You are drawn to them if you see them as someone you can care for and “save,” (or who might save you). Sexually, you seek a sensuous person who is imaginative and bewitching in the bedroom, able to bring fantasy into your sex life.

Your horoscope can give you insights into your emotional needs and a better understanding of the kind of person who will inspire feelings of love within you. It can be a map that helps you find the way to that special person you are meant to love and who is meant to love you.

Black Women Face Devastating Losses If Obamacare Is Repealed

Bianca Adams worked part-time jobs as a spa professional, sometimes juggling two or three at a time, for years. But none of them offered her insurance, which meant that the 47-year-old with diabetes often went to the emergency room for care.

“I was one of those people that had to go to the emergency when my blood sugar got too high and I needed fluids,” Adams told The Huffington Post. “There was really no one managing my health at that point.”

When her Medicaid coverage through the Affordable Care Act began in 2014, Adams, who has been disabled with severe knee problems for 25 years, underwent three major surgeries in six months: a partial hysterectomy to remove a large tumor in June, a total right knee replacement in September and a left knee replacement in November.

“It was brutal, but everything needed to be done. I was very, very sick — and had I not done it then, I’d probably be on a walker right now,” she said.

But that wasn’t her only concern. “I felt like once Republicans got back into office, it would be repealed,” she said. “That was literally the first thing on my mind — to get everything done as soon as possible.”

Black women stand to lose the most if the Affordable Care Act is repealed. This demographic is more susceptible to diabetes, uterine fibroids, obesity, high-blood pressure, domestic abuse and sexual assault than any other. Many black women also have children who depend on them for their health care, since black women are more likely to be sole providers for their household

Obamacare reduced coverage disparities for a number of black women, allowing them to access routine health care treatment and check-ups with a primary care physician. The preventive care clause in the ACA has been life-changing for many black women: It gives them better access to early cancer screenings. Black women are twice as likely as white women to die of cervical cancer and twice as likely to be diagnosed in the later stages of breast cancer.

Historically, the government has paid attention to black women’s health only when it’s convenient, said Joan Faber McAlister, an associate professor at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

“Black women’s health has been pretty much the lowest priority, almost has been completely invisible,” McAlister said. “The only time we see a lot of attention to black women’s health is when it’s being misrepresented to undermine social programs that don’t even primarily benefit black women.”

As of Jan. 1, 32 states had expanded Medicaid to include most low-income Americans. If President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans move forward with their plans to repeal Obamacare, that coverage will go away. So will the tax credits that help lower- and middle-class families afford insurance. Many of the people hit hardest will be black women.

Here are some of their stories.

Karla Baptiste, 43, DeSoto, Texas

After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area for a new job in late September 2007, Karla Baptiste was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer at age 34. A mastectomy that October determined that Baptiste’s cancer was worse than doctors had thought ― it was present in 14 of her lymph nodes and had progressed to stage 3.

She began chemotherapy that November. She would later have three reconstructive surgeries on her breast, six weeks of daily radiation and take regular doses of Tamoxifen, a cancer treatment drug, for four years.

Baptiste was declared cancer free in 2008. But in July 2014, a lesion was found on her vertebrae. The cancer had metastasized to her spine. After another round of treatments, the lesion was gone by February 2015.

Baptiste shows no cancer activity in her body now but is still considered to be a high cancer risk. “I’m cancer free now, but I have stage 4 cancer, and there is no stage 5. I don’t want to go back to a time when insurance companies can deny me just because they decide they don’t want to pay for something.”

“And then I die,” she continued. “It’s that serious for me.”

Baptiste won’t be able to pay for the medicine she needs to survive without the ACA. Her insurance was billed $ 426,702 last year for her care. She paid $ 2,500 of that.

“If the ACA is repealed and not replaced with something that has guardrails for insurance companies, patients like me with pre-existing conditions are the ones they will drop or deny coverage for,” she said. “We cost them too much. The ACA gives me peace of mind that I will receive the care that I need.”

“I’m in a situation where I’m going to be treated indefinitely,” she added. “It’s not something like I get chemo and I’m done ― having my medication is that important to me. It’s keeping me alive.”

Aitza Burgess Reynolds, 22, Chapel Hill, North Carolina

When Aitza Burgess Reynolds’ mom started receiving disability payments in 2015, the 22-year-old college senior was no longer covered under her mother’s plan. She signed up for health care through the ACA marketplace based on her stepfather’s experiences with the program. When he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, the insurance he obtained through the ACA helped the family financially by covering most of his treatments before he died.

The health insurance offered by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which is just over $ 1,100 a semester, was too expensive for Burgess Reynolds. It didn’t include dental or eye care. She has to have her eyes checked every six months and needs prescription glasses and contacts costing over $ 500 to keep from being legally blind.

If the law is repealed and her mom loses disability, Burgess Reynolds would become the sole provider for her household, having to insure herself and her mother. She’d also have to delay going back to graduate school to obtain her doctorate.

“It’s a great injustice to us, and it’s a failure of our system ― maybe not even a failure because, from what I’ve learned, it was systematically designed to be that way,” she said, with the cards stacked against black women.

Akosua, 37, Dallas

Akosua, who did not want her real name published, owns a photography business with her husband. The ACA helps them remain covered since they are self-employed. Akosua and her husband also have pre-existing conditions (she is overweight and he has diabetes).

“The Obama administration really seemed to think about people’s lives and really have compassion for the choices people want to make to be better,” she said.

Akousa was a teacher before opening her own business ― and she was miserable. Obamacare gave her a chance to pursue her dream job. But, she says, politicians want to create an underclass in which people don’t have access to health care and can’t be healthy physically or emotionally.

“We’re moving from the Obama administration to one where people have open disdain for their own citizens ― and that is a major issue to me,” she said. “There’s a great deal of cruelty, and I believe that the repeal of the ACA is not really to [balance the] budget. It’s deliberate social destruction.”

Sandra Thornton, 60, West Point, Georgia

Sandra Thornton is a divorced mom with three kids. She worked for a company called Wide Open West for 37 years before being diagnosed with severe carpal tunnel syndrome. She worked for seven more years after a surgery on her wrist in 2007, then was laid off in August 2014 after a short medical leave.

The following April, Thornton was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. “Without the health care, I wouldn’t be talking to you today,” she said.

Thornton, who is now cancer free, underwent a mastectomy, reconstructive surgery, 38 rounds of radiation and six rounds of chemotherapy. Sickness from the chemotherapy landed her in the hospital after each treatment.

Chemo cost more than $ 6,000 each time, Thornton said. “Who can afford this? No one.”

“You’ve got to have quality health care. Some of the people wouldn’t even take the insurance because it was affordable health care.” Thornton said that initially she couldn’t find a doctor within 100 miles who would take her insurance, until the insurer helped her find a physician.

“You’re already fighting to get well, but then you got to fight the insurance company? It’s pitiful,” she said.

Aisha Crossley, 38, Las Vegas

Aisha Crossley is the head of her household. The 38-year-old casualty specialist for AAA doesn’t qualify for any public assistance and, while she’s covered through her employer, her four children are insured through the Affordable Care Act.

Crossley’s oldest son, 21, has severe asthma. He’s been seeing a pulmonary specialist regularly since he was 2 and is on four medications that need to be refilled each month. Crossley said it’s a blessing to be able to pay an $ 80 quarterly premium and take him to the doctor on a regular basis.

Without insurance, Crossley says, her oldest son would be in the hospital with pneumonia and probably close to dying. “I also have to be concerned if my child is going to have access to the medication that has allowed him to be alive and control his asthma on a daily basis.”

Crossley herself needs monthly medications, her other son sees a dermatologist regularly for a skin condition and her 7-year-old daughter had surgery in October.

This is why a potential repeal of the ACA scares her. She could put her children on her employer’s insurance, but it would cost at least $ 500 a month, leaving Crossley with a maddening decision.

“I’d have to decide on if I want to go with the employer-driven insurance or have my kids be uninsured so we can still eat,” she said.

Faber likened such choices to those that women face in third-world countries.

“You’re facing a choice of which child is going to live in the United States. In a country this wealthy and advanced, we can have a space program but we can’t help women keep their children alive?”

Florida Dope Haul: Seized Heroin Packets Bear Trump’s Image

Drug enforcement agents in Florida had a weird hail-to-the-chief moment when they seized 5,500 packets of heroin and discovered that some of them were stamped with Donald Trump’s image and name.

It was the biggest drug haul ever in Hernando County in central Florida along the western coast. Other packets bore the names and faces of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and Pablo Escobar, the Bradenton Herald reported.

Florida’s attorney general said Friday that it was “a big mistake” to put the president’s face on the heroin. “He is gonna be our most fierce advocate in getting this junk off our streets,” said Pam Bondi, who is also a member of Trump’s transition team. Bondi was entangled in a Trump campaign controversy last year after it was revealed that Trump’s Foundation donated $ 25,000 to her and he hosted a 2014 re-election fundraiser for her. The financial boosts occurred while she was deciding not to join a New York lawsuit charging fraud against Trump University. He later paid $ 25 million in restitution and penalties to settle three different lawsuits against his operation.

Bondi said Friday that she would give the president one of the heroin packets at the end of the case to put in the Oval Office to remind him of “all the good he’s doing.” She added: “I think the wall might get built a little faster,” noting that much of the heroin in the U.S. comes from Mexico.

The heroin packets were seized in a local post office following an eight-month investigation, said Sheriff Al Nienhuis. The probe was launched after a postal worker discovered an early shipment of heroin and alerted authorities. That’s when law enforcement began tracking the suspect, who they said was purchasing heroin in the northeast and having it shipped to Florida.

Kelvin Scott Johnson was arrested and faces charges of heroin trafficking, cocaine and heroin possession, and unlawful use of a two-way communication system, among other offenses, according to Neinhuis. He is being held in lieu of $ 75,000 bail.
